Hiya, from Kentucky and been researching pythons and corns for two+ years. I bought a ball about a year ago from a pet shop (My heart is too big... she looked ill and I wanted to help... that type of... behaviour... is usually reserved for dog/cat owners lol) and she died two months later from an infection. :( I think I gave her a good last few months though. Anyway, been going to a few rep. shows lately and will be setting up a corn tank soon. I want a big tank, but because I've not really owned snakes before, I want to start out small and get plenty of advice, so I'll do just that. :) Any advice for a first-timer?

First off welcome to the forum, second sorry to hear about your ball. You always take a risk with pet stores. For your first corn, if it is a hatchling a 10 gallon tank will be fine. Get some cypress or aspen substrate, a UTH(under tank heater) that will cover about 1/4 to 1/3 of the tank. Next a good heavy waterbowl that the snake can not spill too easily, a hide box(this can be purchased or made from something like a jello box for a hatchling or a cereal box for an adult), a good stick on thermometer with a probe. Make sure the temperature stays around 75-85 or else you can run into a whole world of problems. That should be everything you need for your first corn setup. If I have forgotten anything someone please post what I forgot. Best of luck and Welcome again.

Thanks for all the info (And the welcome! :)), but I already knew all of it :p Something I wanted to look into was flexwatt, but don't know much about it.

Thats awesome that you did your research before getting a snake. Flexwatt is a brand of UTH. It is juts two thin sheets of plastic with electrical currents running in between that heat up. Very good stuff, that is all I use for my corns, and I use that and a heat light for my boa. Cant go Wong with flexwatt

Hi and welcome!

The best advice anyone could give you at this early stage is read and research as much as possible. The FAQ and search features are on this forum for a reason and not used NEARLY as much as they should be!

Best of luck with your new corn :)

Love the pied avatar btw

Something I'll be saving up for forever :p

Welcome

Howdy Capt.

I was raised in Middlesboro KY and now live in Bristol TN. After 20 years of globehopping as a guest of the USAF I've settled down in one place long enough to become a responsible snake Owner. Actually, I think my snakes own me. I envy you for the fact you are in a state that has two monthly Herp shows, I keep trying to figure out a way to get to the Morehead show, but since my wife is not a super supportive partner to my addiction, I can't convince her to make the 5 hour one way trip. But like a stone I keep trying to chip away at her resistance to get to go. I look forward to hearing from you and hope you enjoy your babies near as much as I do. Nothing beats watching your babies grow and thrive. I can be having a lousy day and my critters can always make me smile.

No question, Are you a Cat or a Cardinal? I'm 100 % Blue, Het for nothing else. Go BIG BLUE.......

Major Card! Born + raised in Louisville, so of course! :p Hope you can eventually get up here to a few shows! I'm thinking of going to one in Shelbyville the 3rd, very excited. July I'll be heading to Milwaukee then I'll have to find the shows there! :( But thankfully my future husband likes reptiles as much as I do, so I won't be told "no" too much. Hehe.

I envy you for having a tolerant partner. Maybe having one like mine will pay off cause it will slow me down on my collection enough to make sure my herd grows slow as my skills and knowledge base grows. That is one reason I waited so long to get snakes in the first place. I had to wait until we settled in one area because I wanted to make sure I could be a responsible owner. But dang how I wish I could get more and more. Right now I pushing to get males to go with my little girls. I have plenty of time we have at least a year if not longer until they are ready to breed. Thanks for replying and I wish you the best in the future.

Later
Mule
