Hello everyone! I'm new here, as you all can probably tell! I've loves snakes for a long time, but I couldn't persuade my parents to let me have one till now! I'll be getting one or two this summer, but I don't know where to get them from. I was wondering if anyone here had any advise on where to buy cornies....I'm really excited, and I've been doing lots of research! I have a 20 gallon aquarium for the little guy(s) and a hood light and all! I'm gonna get a UTH because i heard it was the best thing for them. I already have temp/humidity gauges, and hiding spots, but I was wondering.....whats the best type of subsatrate for them? I've read a lot about them, and some say its reptile bark and others say different things, so, which is best in your opinion?

Thanks for reading....I know I'm really obsessed, but hey, I LOVE CORN SNAKES!! I'm so glad I finally get to own one!!

So, Hi everyone!! :wavey:

If you conveniently and immediately want to buy a corn, I would check your local reptile shop. They will always have corn snakes. But lots of people have gotten theirs from breeders... such as Kathy Love. You can visit her site at http://www.corn-utopia.com/.

As far as the best substrate, I would get whatever you like the best. Lots of people swear by Aspen, or you can use Sani-Chips, Repti-Bark, etc. And obviously do not use pine as it has harmful oils in it.

As for the cons, Aspen is a little dusty, Sani-Chips do not hold burrows, and Repti-Bark may have mites and is expensive.

Personally, I use Sani-Chips for my corn as it is very easy to clean and looks nice. Hope this helps.

Hi and welcome! I'm still pretty new here too. I also could never convince my parents to let me have a snake and now I have a nice little amelanistic butter corn and a leopard gecko. I am getting another snake, either a ball python or another corn later this month!

Substrate can be anything from newspaper or paper towels to the aspen or reptile bark. I personally use a mix of the bark and aspen so it's not quite so dusty. You can also use astroturf as well. Mine loved the turf but it gets stained with pooh and has to be REALLY cleaned too often for me.

Hello and welcome :wavey:

I use aspen for my snakes. One brand had very large flakes & did seem a bit dusty. The brand I use now is more finely shredded & seems softer & is not dusty at all.

Welcome to the site!!!!!!!! There is a lot of information here. Be sure to read the FAQ section in the forums. They answer a lot of questions.
There are a lot of great people here. Everybody is always willing to help.

I use aspen also. It is easy to spot clean for corns. My ball python made it a little harder. She poops alot. :grin01:

I got both of mine at a reptile show. They have really good prices. If you do a Google search for your city and reptile show, you should get a couple of shows.

WOW!! Everyone here is so kind! Ok, I'll go with aspen then!! Since all of you said you use it! hehehe! I probably won't be getting my corn till later this month. Me and my family were going to move, but we couldnt sell our house so we're staying and we're going to paint.....I don't want to get them right away and then have them get sick because of all the paint fumes! That would be horrible! But I am however going to start stalking up on all the necessary supplies! Oh, btw, do stores sell frozen pinkies? Or should i just buy an older snake? Because, if I have to get live pinkies, and then kill them, thats a no for me..... :eek1:

Thanks everyone for being so kind! I really hope in the future i can be a great snake expert and help people like you all are helping me out! That'll be the day!

OH, one last question, what are all the corn colors? I read about ghosts, and snows....Im so CONFUSSED!! But I know how to care for em, so thats a plus!

2 corns 1 cage

Hello im Patrick Crockett. Im sorta new here too but I thought I might help you out.

You might want to think about separating your corns some of the older keepers will dog on you for it cause it causes stress... I'd have to say I agree and figured I'd throw you a heads-up...but thats just my opinion....you can listen or you can learn...I tried housing two corns together once but they started stressing out and I learned not to try it again :shrugs: ...but thats, once again, just my opinion...(Sorry if im sounding like a jerk)

In terms of buying a snake though I would try to find a local reptile show...where are you located at?...Flordia and Cali tend to have reptile shows at least 3 or 4 times a year that I personally know of.

There are reptile shows every month around me. Which is great.

Cohabitation

Hey all I know is that housing cornsnakes together didnt work out for me...I know its possible but theres just been alot of debate about the problems of housing corns together...im just trying to keep him from making the mistakes ive made in the past...just my opinion....and I know that some more experienced keepers would call someone on it..I know its possible to house them together (If you find a way to do it tell me so I have more proof its possible)...Im tring to tell you without sounding like a stuck-up prick but, like I said, some of the expert keepers will say the same thing but will probably sound a bit more mean.

I live way up in Virginia....So I'll have to check and see about where I can get my corn(s) I'll probably just get one, One is enough for now.....Is a 20 gallon aquarium big enough? There is a place near where I live called the Pet Pandamonium.....they breed snakes, and I saw some fabulous corns there....has anyone heard of this store? Would you recomend it?

And thank you Patrick for that heads up, I needed it, and no I don't think you're a jerk, its very kind of you to help me out! I wouldn't want any problems

So thanks again, for the links and all.....I look forward to getting to know all of you! :wavey:

Thanks for not being mad I gave one guy advice he didnt like on a different site nd he still wont forgive me... A 20 gallon should be fine but I would buy a 30 gallon setup for when hes bigger... the more room he has the happier he is... again thanks for not being mad.

You're welcome Patrick, I'd rather have the good info and let my snake live a long time, than get two and have problems ect. And thank you Jenkva for the links and all, i WILL have fun, and you can believe that! Thanks everyone for being so kind....I'm glad i found this forum!!

I also just recently got my parents to let me get a snake, and im loving it. As far as substrate goes I recomend jungle earth. It is more expensive than aspen and other such substrates but i find it much more pleasing to the eye. It a not really bark, its more of a mulch, so it absorbs water which is good. Anyways welcome.

Oh, jungle earth? I'll have to look for that! :) Oh, does anyone think Forest bed is ok? I use it for hermit crabs, but it says its for reptiles.....but its damp all the time, so I dont think its good for snakes....any suggestions? :shrugs:

For my displays that are in public I use Aspen all the time. It looks good and holds burrows so the corns love it. I also use it for babies who I keep long term while they are in that time when they need to feel as secure as possible. (about their first 90 days).

I have drifted between Aspen and Paper for my breeder racks. If you where a glove you can spot change it fast enough in the racks but paper is free and even faster to change out. All my African House Snakes are in Aspen right now (spoiled little guys and gals) but as the breeding colony grows paper is looking better.

For a few vivs though Aspen is hard to beat especially for corns they love to burrow and it gives em nice tunnels,

Jack

About the glove nothing to do with being bit it is so you can grab a clump of soiled aspen with out getting snake poop all over your hands. When it is dry it is not that bad (long as you wash your hands when done) but if it is fresh and you grab it specially from a large corn personally let me just say :puke01:

With paper you just get a holder bin and a trash can. Open rack, put snake in bin, remove bowl and hides place in bin with snake, crumble paper into trash, place new paper, replace snake, bowl and hides, fill bowl with fresh water, done.

With Aspen and a glove you can go faster but then you got to do a full change at least every 60 days. So it cancles out and I just don't like putting on those surgical gloves for some reason :shrugs: feels kind of wierd to me.

Ha! Thanks for all this advice everyone! I really don't know when I'll finally get my first corn to be honest though....I want to know as much about them before I get one, so I know what to do, and I don't do anything that may cause harm to it! I think I'll use aspen for my corn, and as for gloves and cleaning poop....hah, im a lifeguard, so gloves are good with me! maybe turning a plastic bag inside out and grabing it then pulling it right side in would work too? Ha, im full of all these good ideas! :crazy02:

I'm pretty sure I know how my corns' enclosure will look....I have a 20 gallon Long aquarium, with a full hood light ect. (It has a flourescent light.....should I replace it with some other type of light? ) I'll probably use aspen and repti-bark as bedding, and have a UTH under one side of the tank (The warm side) I'll have climbing branches over there too of course, and the other side (The cool side) I'll have a water pond (which I already have) that he/she can skinny dip in :grin01: along with a hiding area....and I'll probably put a hiding area on the warm side too.....This corn will probably be one of the most spoiled corns EVER!!

OK, one last question. Do petstores sell frozen pinkies? I mean like, Petco or Petsmart....I haven't looked myself yet, and I was wondering if any of you have ever seen them there. My parents most likely wont let me order snake food off the internet, so I need to find a place to buy it, and I will most likely be starting off with a baby corn of course  because I want to have it for a long time, and mainly, I can't find a place that sells older ones....plus as i said, I'm not aloud to order them off the internet.... . I know they have regular frozen feeders at petco, but I'm not sure about pinkies....so....where do you all get yours? I'm not going to breed them and kill off the pinkies as food.... :sidestep:

Sorry this is so long, but I want to know as MUCH as possible before I adopt my first beloved corn.....which of course will be named Swiper, because my mom won't let me have it unless I name it Swiper!! LOL

THANX A BUNCH!

Petco and Petsmart sell f/t pinkies and fuzzies. They can be a little expensive compared to online or at reptile shows. Of course with ordering online, you have shipping which can be pretty high. I get mine at the reptile shows. They are pretty cheap.

Thats good to know....i think they sell em in packs, so i'll only have to buy one pack every now and then! I've got a job though, so it wont be hard to find the $$$ for him....

Again, thanx for all the kind welcomes, and all the great advice, i really appreciate it!! And when I get my corn, ill be sure to give you all some pics!!
