New Baby Corn Issues!

Ok I have had my corn for 3 days now and I have a few paranoid new keeper issues.

I just assumed he was getting used to the environment but for some reason he keeps on sticking to the cooler side of the tank. I am fairly certain that the warm area isn't too hot as its just a heat mat that I have used and he sits on the cool side coiled up (I'm not sure but I assume this is a sign that he is maybe cold :S). The floor area is 680mm x 350mm and I am using a 280mm x 280mm 12w euro rep heat mat. It seems to be working fine as far as I can tell and I keep moving the furniture about because I thought it was that he just really liked the log hide but hes now sitting out of sight behind the water bowl on the cool side again.

The tank is just over 18 gallons (680mm x 350mm x 350mm) so I'm not sure if it's too large for him but I spent a lot of time building it so if he will get used to it I would prefer that.

I have got a log hide that I bought from a pet shop and a cave hide that I also got from a pet shop but seems a little large for him. Also a small water bowl that I keep stocked up with mineral water.

He is not really moving day or night as far as I can see but obviously I can't watch him 24/7 although I usually am up quite late.

I fed him yesterday (the day after I got him) which he seemed fine with and he has kept it down well. I haven't handled him today (don't know why I keep referring to it as a him haven't got a clue really) as thats wat all the care sheets and advice told me to do.

I also got the wrong bulb from the pet store so I bought a cheap 60w bulb but this read as 35oC on the crappy stick on thermometer (dont worry I'm getting new ones). So i replaced it with an energy saving 8w bulb but I'm worried this could be producing too much light lol what is a good bulb to have because I've read so many different recommendations from so many different places. I also left the light (8w) on for 2 days without thinking  remember again rookie.

It may just be him being a new environment but I am concerned.

This could just be me being paranoid as I said before but I just wanted some feedback any and all welcome btw (your a idiot would also be fine )

Thanks Guys.

ummm I would bet he is moving around at night ... but I would suggest junking up the tank/ enclosure a bit ... 2 much open spaces freaks them out.

i just busied up my girls tank,it was pretty busy before, but she seems SOOOO much happier to climb, and hide in leaves and flowers and just hide out in her tall grass and hides

I mean .... but she seems SOOOO much happier to climb, and hide in leaves and flowers than to just hide out in her tall grass and plain hides

The first thing you need to look into is a decent thermostat. Your average heat mat can reach temps of 120*F which is enough to kill a corn. With this you should get a thermometer with probes to place under the substrate. Your tank should work fine. I kept my first in a 20L viv as a hatchling with no ill effects. Lights really aren't necessary in the viv but if you decide to keep it make sure the bulb is covered so the little guy can't burn himself. Good job not handling for the first 48 hours after feeding. It sounds like you're on the right track!

Thermostat

So can I use a regular electric dimmer and monitor the temperature as opposed to the very expensive and as far as I can see uneccesary thermostat?

My thermostat was $38 and very necessary...but yes, the dimmer will work too. With a dimmer you'll still want to keep an eye on the temps because they tend to fluctuate if your room temp changes much.
