New corn 2 questions-

Ok just picked up a ~4 year old corn. She appears to be in good health but a little skinny and her last shed wasn't the best sooooo 1) feeding- they were feeding her pinkies, I picked up some adult mice to feed her approriately but was wondering what size rat is comparable to an adult mouse? I'm asking because I've heard rats are more nutritious. 2) Heating, She's in a 50gal tank and was curious in general will the repti-therm Large UTH for 50-60 gal tanks heat the warm side approriately?? Or should I be looking into buying/making a rheostat?

I can't help you on the best place to find a UTH, the only advice I could give is to locate a reputable reptile store and go from there, or do some googling maybe. How are you heating the vivarium right now?

Secondly, very importantly, do not move the snake straight from pinkies up to adult mice, she isn't accustomed to food of this size and chances of a regurge would be very high (then she's in a hell of a lot more trouble).

Mice have plenty of nutrition so I wouldn't concern yourself with locating rats just yet. It's more important to gradually build her up to food of the correct size.

It shocks me a 4 year old would still be on pinkies (the fault of her previous owners, clearly), are you positive she's around this age? How large is she?

I would suggest looking on rodent pro as they usually have a size chart available, but I believe weanling rats are generally close to large mice. As to whether or not rats are more nutritious there is a raging debate on that on many forums. Without knowing the nutritional needs of corns though it is pointless to discuss the nutritional differences between mice and rats (sound logic a breeder once told me).

As to the UTHs you could check out Matt from MGReptiles, The Bean Farm, or your local pet store (usually mightily overpriced). I would highly suggest not "guessing" that the UTH will provide the necessary heat but invest in a rheostat (you can also make your own) or thermostat (more expensive) to monitor the heat the UTH puts out. Also, I would suggest getting an thermometer (not the pet store dial kinds). Walmart sells great thermometers (can monitor two sides with a probe) with hygrometers for $9 and $7 varieties that just check two temp areas. Of course, you could also get a flukers digital thermometer as well. :)

Hope this helps and your girl settles in well and takes to the new (and appropriately sized) food items well!! :)

Good point about the regurge Tracee. I saw your post after I wrote mine. Getting an approimate size and weight would be a good start to figuring out what size she should be eating then gradually work your way up to that point.

That is a good point but it also makes a good argument to feed a variety of things to your snake like mice, rats, day old chicks, quail, and maybe even lizards if you have a good supply.

A little more info- she was eating adult mice but the lady who owned her moved out of town and her mother was caring for her and was clueless. She tryed telling me of the importance of UVB for her etc. She has gone from rabbit pellet substrate, one hide, a crappy water cup, a feeding dish in her tank, and a heat rock to:
1) aspen bedding, and she's enjoying burrowing through it.
2) 2 hides, one on each end. she kept her favorite log and also got a new one.
3) an appropriate sized water bowl that she seems to like our water better or something cuz she went straight to it and drank for a good minute and then soaked for awhile.
4) she now has a UTH. I went and picked one up, couldn't stand the thought of the heat rock in there. She's a gorgeous red albino( or something I'll get a pic up later, just letting her get settled in to her new home now).

also I already have a digital thermometer. She is about 4' long according to the previous owner, I haven't tried measuring her yet. Just etting her be. She has some decent thickness to her, but she looks a little dehydrated and you can 'see' the previous poor shed. Hopefully with her next shed she'll look good as new. Either way she's a sweety.

My daughter decided we should change her name to Goldie Locks so here she is:
