Ok I had to ask here to be sure. My vet does know snakes but still.

I got Scarlet yesterday. Vet popped and said its a she but I will check now and then as she grows since she is only 13 inches.

Vet said no to mites and she looks healthy but her shed is patchy. I read somewhere to spritz to help with shedding, is this right? I don't want to try it until I know if its ok.

Getting ahead of myself here. She was already shedding when I got her. They fed her while shedding which I hear isn't a good idea. Her skin is coming off in patches. I did take her to the vet this morning to be sure she is healthy. I know, I know if you can't trust your vet right? Its just I heard the best snake people were on this forum.

Sounds like your tank humidity isn't very good. Misting is eh. Try giving a bath in almost warm water for about 15 mins and seeing if this helps. Then try to work the skin off with a damp towel. I would suggest raising the humidity when you notice that she is going into the blue, by spraying.

Good Luck,

Wayne

give her a bath in water for a few minutes and use a paper towel to try to work the patches of shed off. to help avoid this problem you might need to help the humidity in your cage by making sure your warm side is the right temp and you got a water dish she can submerge her whole body in. and if that doesnt help with the patches next time you can mist her cage everday that shes in shed with a water bottle and also put spaghum moss in her cool side hide. just some suggestions. make sure the eyecaps come off in the shed also.

If my snakes will eat while in blue, I go ahead and feed them. I've had no problems with snakes shedding with a full belly.

What you might want to do is get a small container (sandwich size is fine since you have a small snake), put some damp crumpled newspaper and paper towels in it, add your snake, and leave it alone for the night. In the morning, I'm sure all the pieces of shed skin will be off.

I only got her yesterday so change in environment wouldn't help that fast would it? I will try giving her a bath, how do I do that exactly?

This is great info but everyone is missing the point that I GOT her like this. The humidity in MY tank that she is in NOW is about 45%. I read this is pretty good?

Awesome will do this tonight thanks!

geiniandkathy,

You are right, if you just got her yesterday there's no way that YOUR tank humidity is affecting her CURRENT shed. So don't worry, you didn't do anything wrong.
And 45% is great...and future sheds should be too :D
If you are worried in the future, you could mist just enough to bump it up to 50-55% but only when you know that your girl is going into shed.

Congrats on the new baby :)

Yeah, your humidity level is fine. When she's in blue, you can do the above, but since you just got her I would leave her alone for now (say until Wed.). I would be careful with spritzing since it can speed up the growth of bacteria and fungus in the viv. I find that simply putting a stack of newspaper over the screen can bring it up enough in shed (the paper traps the water evaporating from the water bowl). But, like you said, this is all just for the future- nothing you could've done about the last shed.

Thanks everyone. I do hope I did not come across as I dunno hissy? LOL! I just did not want anyone thinking I did this to her. Another thing was that she was formerly housed with 2 other corns. Supposedly clutch mates. (Is that the right term?)

Wanted to let everyone know her shed seems to be improving. I saw her in her water bowl a couple of times so I have to wonder if maybe the old owners did not have enough water in the viv she and the other two were in? Anyway she got REALLY active last night so I am relaxing now and enjoying!

Thank you to all that helped!

Kathy
