New corn owner!

Codeman_111

Hi, I'm addicted to corn.
Hey all!

I've been browsing the threads here a bit, and have decided to register myself as a new member!!! (Love the snakes w/ their owner pics!, read through all 65+ pages...)

I have recently saved my new corn from a local pet store. He's adapting to 'his' home quite nicely and has already eatin' his first pinky as of last night! (YAY!) He's still quite small, maybe a little over a foot in length, I would assume only a few weeks/months old? I didn't receive very much info on him from the pet store, so I'm not sure when his b-day was exactly. =(

Previously, I've owned primarily King's. I was lucky enough to find a beautiful Cali. King near Winston, Oregon. I kept her for about a year and a half, she was then released back into her natural habitat. She was a wonderful snake, and I was sad to see her go. I just couldn't keep her from what she longed for, to be back in the great outdoors... ='( Since then I've wanted another King and have been looking high and low. I've decided to fill the whole in my life w/ my new baby corn!

For now he's livin' the good life in a 10-gal aquarium w/ all the accessories. I'm using a day-glow lamp for 12 hours, then a 75w infared spot at night to keep the temp between 80-90. Humidity stays right around 50%, which seems pretty sufficient. Since he just ate his first meal yesterday, I don't have any pics quite yet.. Soon to come though! He's just your standard, run of the mill, normal coloring but he sure is a beauty! I'll be checking in throughout the week, and I'll post any updates as they come down the road.

Thanks for being here! :spinner:

Welcome to the forum! Hope you find all the information you seek and who knows maybe you'll get a king as well in the future...snakes are like pringles..you can't have just one..lol :0)

Uhh, I found him and released him in the same area. California Kings are documented to be found as far north as Roseburg, Oregon. Although I personally know of king snakes that have been found farther north, around Cottage Grove. :dgrin:

Hehe no worries, well I got bored and decided to take some pics of my new guy and his setup! I also threw in some old pics of previously owned snakes. (Cali. King and Vine Snake!) Sorry 'bout the pic size, too lazy to scale down..

On a side note, I was curious if anyone knows the proper name of his coloration? Sort of red / orange on a tanish background? It might help me pick out a name or some sort! :shrugs:

Doin' what he does best.. Hiding!

Why would you put a garter snake in with a king snake? Kings eat other snakes...I hope you weren't intentionally trying to feed that snake to the king...You could have just fed him a mouse and it would have been a whole lot safer....

The king was wild caught, I know it wasn't the safest meal, but they eat other snakes in the wild! It wasn't very often that I fed him other snakes, either. I believe I only fed him two garters the entire time I kept him. Although, I did primarily feed him live mice. With my captive bred snakes, they never see live food and always get fed in a seperate enclosure. I thought posting these two pics were a little 'risque' for a snake forum, and I apologize in advance for anyone that was offended by the 'snake on snake' action.. Anyone else have any comments/suggestions? I'm open to any type of constructive criticism! :duck:

Yeah, they only eat lizards and other snakes as far as I know. We had ours eatin' Anoles. I say 'had' because I'm no longer with the owner of the vine snake. As far as I know, he's still doing great!

Hi and welcome to the forums, i have had my snake for a long tim now (over a year) and you will find they get large and fat quick!!
I got mine as a baby and he is very large now!
Be careful about the size! My snake needs a new tank because he is so big!
I am getting one for my birthday :(
Thats the thing with pets! They take over your presents!

Anyway.. just warning you!

Hope you find all the information and help you need :)

Sorry about the spelling mistakes, i am awful at typing!

Seeing your king throwing coils around the garter was interesting to see. My integrade king coils around his f/t miice the same way and it wasn't until I fed him a culled hatchling corn last year that I realised what the excessive (compared to a corn) coils are really for.

Yeah, I can't wait to see him grow to his full potential! I'm already planning on a larger enclosure and once I find a good deal on a 20+ Gallon, I'll look into gettin' a new baby to take his old home! =)

Lovin' the quotes on here; :crazy02:

"Corn snakes are like crack, but better!"

"Snakes are like pringles, once you pop, you can't stop!"

I'll be posting some more pics of him fairly soon, he's very reluctant to show himself these days! He ate his 2nd meal already and is doing fantastic! I bought frozen pinkys when I rescued him. After seeing the larger pinky's that members are feeding their younger snakes, I think he may need to upgrade to a larger size meal. He only went three days between feedings and was ready for more! When he eats the remaining 4, I'll look for an upgrade. Frozen mice are new to me, as I have always fed live mice to my other snakes. Would a live pinky be harmful in any way? Other than them needing to be eaten almost right away? As for when he gets to peach fuzzies and beyond, should I still go with frozen to keep my, captive bred, baby safe? I'm just not sure on the quality of the pet stores frozen mice. Although I've seen some pretty unhealthy looking live mice from the local herp store...

Any thoughts / comments are greatly appreciated!
