New Corn Snake owner from MN

New member
Hi everyone I just got my new corn snake last week and wanted to introduce myself here. I am completely new to snakes so very excited to start a new journey with my new buddy :). Here are few pics of him:

Loves to go up there

He looks scared here

He loves his hides

Got him a new hide for him in the middle of the cage and he loves it

He had his first pinkie last night and he has been in his new hide all day.

Also took a video of him eating last night

Hello and welcome! Cute baby! Is his pupils red? Can't quite tell from the pictures.

Thank you! His pupil is red. I think he is an albino. I wonder what morph he is. The place i got him from said he is a sunglow stripe.

That's possible. Definitely a stripe and an amel for sure, sunglow is a line bred amel, I believe but don't really know that for sure. I think it means amels with no white on the dorsal and sides. Again, I could be wrong on that!
But he's for sure a striped amel!

Great! Its been a week he is so shy though. Only comes out at night and whenever sees me runs into his hide :(. Was kind of hard feeding him too. He was under the aspen and I guess smelt it and took it out of the tweezer. But it was kind of sad to see him all scared and backed up into the wall of the tank.

Don't take it personally, you are a huge, mean giant to him still, but once he gets to know you and know that you are a friend and not a foe he won't hide as much. But even if he does continue to be a hider (many are) still don't take it personally. Like people, some corns are just shyer than others!

Welcome! Where did you get him? I'm just over the border in WI, but we travel to the cities often.

Welcome, beautiful snake. I'm new here too, and I've learned a lot so far. I'm surprised no one has said anything yet about your lamps. Corn snakes do not need lamps for heat, they need belly heat, as in a UTH. Also the red pupils can be damaged from the light. Yikes. You will learn so much. The UTH helps them digest their food also.

I got him from leaping lizards, its a store in Burnsville. Very cool store with many different reptiles and tarantulas. They sell feeders too. You check it out. :)

I do have a Zoo Med UTH that is under the tank (Left side). The temp is regulated with a thermostat. I just have the light up for viewing. There is also an infrared light to for night time viewing.

I did not know about the red pupil and light wow. The problem now is he like his new snake cave and its in the middle of the tank so does not have any mat underneath. He has been there for two days after I fed him. So not much I can do to regulate the temp in there. Here's a vid I made of my setup

Sweet! I almost went there a few days ago. I recently bought a vehicle from Walser Mazda in Burnsville and I was there to have something fixed. Next time I will check that place out! I have heard of it from others, too.

Enjoy your striped cutie!

Wow, you have a lot more high tech stuff than me, I'd say you're doing great. I wish I had one of those laser temp readers. Where did you get yours? One of my babies stays in her hide in the middle which also isn't near the UTH, and that's where she stayed after she ate last time. Oh well, I guess she will go where ever she wants. She used to stay in her tiny coconut shell near the UTH, but she's moved to this huge aztec looking hide. I wonder what would happen next time I clean the viv if I moved the hides around? We shall see then where she'll stay.

Yup, that's the point of having lots of hides, they will choose the one they are most comfortable in.

As long as you have a UTH under 1/3 of the tank set at 87° on the thermostat it will keep the whole viv regulated to perfect corn snake temps.

And yes, some overhead lights can cause severe damage or blindness in some corns. They have no eyelids, and the slight hood over their eyes like we have eyebrows doesn't do much to protect their eyes, and other than that they have no protection. There is no good reason to use a light, but many dangers.

That's great, its definitely worth visiting. It used to be owned by a lady been there for 20 years now recently a guy named Brian bought it from her. They have boas, python, tarantulas etc. I got to know it from a breeder who sold her hatchlings to him(including my stripe).

Those infrared temp guns are really handy. Including 2 other thermometers it really gives me the piece of mind that the tank is regulated at an optimum temperature for him. This is where I got mine from

http://www.amazon.com/Nubee®-Temper...7818289&sr=8-1&keywords=nubee+temperature+gun

Very accurate and lets me know the temp of the substrate too. I am also getting a small tank therm(The sticker types) for the cold area. If you have an UTH I would definitely recommend my thermostat got that off amazon too fairly cheaper than the zoomeds and other herp stats

Gotcha do the Infrared night ones affect their eyes? I sometimes turn those on to see him at night.
