New family member: retired racing greyhound!

Blue Apple Herps

aka Matthew, PhD
Thought I'd share some pics of the newest addition to our family: a retired racing ground. His name is Gordon. He was on route to be a racing champ until he broke his rear hock and was retired. Was adopted out to another home for 2 years, but was returned to the rescue group b/c they decided they didn't want a dog anymore.

So now's in our home forever! I've wanted a greyhound ever since I was 12. Finally done with grad school, bought a house, and have a grownup job with normal hours so I knew it was time to welcome a grey into our home.

He's slowly settling in, but we're so glad to have him with us.

Matthew,

He looks like he's adjusting just fine! I'm thinking of adopting a retired racer, but unfortunately, I'm at the legal 3-dog limit, and one of my crew will have to pass on first.

He's a nice-looking boy, and thank you for rescuing!

Kathy

That's awesome! I know that when I'm in a position to get a dog, I WILL be getting a greyhound. Everything about their personality and lifestyle meshes perfectly with what I want in a dog. :)

When I was much younger, I used to work at the local greyhound track, on a volunteer basis. I would help feed and de-tick the dogs. My bf and I at that time adopted a pair. When we split up, I took my dog with me. After I got married and moved to an apartment, my dog Abby went to live with my sister. Abby died of cancer in 1993 at the age of 11. Since then, my sister and her wife have decided that greyhounds are "their breed" and have adopted several since and kept them until they passed from old age. First was Andy, then Cassie, and now Ellie.

Great dogs, all of them! Congrats on your new buddy!

Congrats on your new addition! He looks quite happy and that he is adjusting well. I love greyhounds and would some day also like to adopt a retired racer!

OMG I love greys!!! I've loved them since I was a kid and always wanted to get a retired racer, I see them all the time at adoption fairs. I figure someday I will have the money, house, and time to be able to get one!

I love the "Couch potatoes" as the local newsletter here calls them..
My old neighbor was a foster for them. I love their laid back attitudes.!

Thanks everyone for the compliments and kind words. Yes, he is definitely a 40 mph couch potato!

Their super chill personalities and laid back demeanor is what I've always loved about them. This guy sleeps more than our cats during the day! He's seriously such a bum. But it is fun whenever he gets bursts of energy and will run around like a crazy banshee in our back yard for 3 minutes, then promptly pass out for 6 hours.
