New Leopard Gecko :D

I just got paid today for taking care of my neighbor's dog.. And i convinced my parents to let me have a gecko.. So today i went to the pet shop and got one! I set up the tank yesterday. It's a 15gal.. and i have a heat lamp with a 60 watt nighttime bulb. Also bought calcium and multivitamin powders... I have a couple crickets left that my spider hasn't eaten.. So i'll feed those today and get some crickets and mealies from the bait shop tomorrow.

He's a four year old adult, actually.. but i kind of prefer that, because at least he's proven to be a survivor.. and they live 20+ years.. so, yeah. He's so cute :D I think i'll call him Godzilla.

And expect lots of pics in a few days, after i give him time to settle in!

Oh, and i got my sister a Betta fish, too. She loves all kinds of fish and sea-critters.. and had told me before that she wanted fish, but having to keep them filtered and all would be too much work and money.. So i got her a betta, since they aren't all that complicated. Got a betta kit with a half gal tank and food, too.

What a good sibling you are! :)

I have both a leopard gecko (actually, 2 lovely ladies...) and 1 betta fish who himself has proven to be quite the survivor! I only mention my own leopard geckos because I don't use a heat lamp for them -- just a UTH. They love the belly heat...:)

And...I'm sure that you know this, but you're keeping the betta separate from other fish, right? :) I have a 2.5 gallon tank that has a betta divider and I thought that I'd show my students that nature has some survival instincts to it, and I also wanted to see for my own sake, so I put in the divider and on one side went the classroom fish (a big beautiful red one who I was sure would overcome!) and my fish from home, a skimpy looking betta who I thought was going to die right away...well, wouldn't you know it, but the skimpy betta developed some big beautiful purple & blue fins and must've stressed my red betta out nicely enough because he eventually croaked. (We had a talk on death that day, and the kids did a good job of rationalizing and relating life to being a cycle...) They really tried to attack each other almost every other min...it was amazing to watch them duck & hide & then try to get at each other's fins! :eats02:

Congrats on the new pets! Enjoy! :)

yeah. The betta is by itself.

and i'm mostly using the light instead of a UTH because i have this 15 gal tank with a slate bottom. and i don't think you're supposed to put UTHs on stuff other than glass.. Plus, i think the slate will probably hold the heat well down there to give enough belly heat.

I didn't know about UTHs being only with glass; hmm, sounds like a good point...:)

Yeah, the slate should absorb the heat and act like a UTH on its own...be careful with that, though (as I'm sure you already know...); you have a thermostat on that, right? I can't imagine what a burn on the belly (not to forget their lil'sweet toes!) would feel like... :realhot:

Have you named him yet? :)

I guess I'm the only one uber obsessed with bettas here.
1/2 gallon is too small. It's a consumer money trap. At LEAST 1 gallon, and not a vase either. He'll live a lot longer and be a lot happier in a tank. Even if you go buy a 2.5 gallon glass tank, so much better than 1/2 gallon.

But yay congrats on the Leo!

The temperatures seem to be good. at the hottest point, directly under the lamp, it's staying right around 90.. I have a dimmer i can use if it starts getting too hot, but i keep checking the temps today and it seems right. And i read somewhere that 90 is about what it should be at the hottest spot(the rest of the tank is cooler). I also have two hide boxes, one on each side, just like with my snake.. And one of them has some moist paper towels in there to give him some humidity. Earlier he was laying on top of the hide box i have under the light basking in the heat. He had his eyes closed, i think he was napping there under the lamp. It was adorable :) And, i think i'm going to call him Godzilla.

But, yeah.. I didn't want to take him out, but i took some pics of him in his tank..

I'm happy for you Casey and that is a nice gecko. I had no idea they lived that long. Good for you getting the betta for your sis. susan

Godzilla is a cutie...my leos are very spotty like yours is, too. :) They have such pretty eyes...I swear that I'm going to put eyelashes on my girls to really give their long, slow blinks some true flirty sassiness! (Though I'd honestly never do it!)

And, I love it when they lie out like yours and their legs are all akimbo, turned & twisted every which way. :) They are little charmers...!

I know! They have beautiful eyes :D His eyes look all silver-colored and stuff... My dad called him "ugly" yesterday, and i just don't understand how anyone could think that. I mean, i can see how someone might not think that all kinds of lizards are pretty.. But leos are puppy-dog cute! They have such big eyes, that smiley-looking face, and the way they move their chubby little bodies around when they walk.. lol.

Go go Godzilla!! I'm so glad you got an adult- he'll be way cooler. I'm glad your parents let you get him. He's very pretty.

I just fed him four crickets(dusted with calcium) and a mealworm. It's like watching a cat hunt! lol. One time, right before he sort of lunged at a cricket, he did this funny tail-wag thing. Wagged his tail really fast and then bit at the cricket(but missed that time!).

I've found that he'll actually take mealworms right out of my hand.. Once he sees them moving around he'll look at it for a second, then move his head to a different position and look at it again, then move his head to another position and look at it.. then MUNCH. I'm also feeding crickets, but he seems to especially enjoy the mealies.

But, yeah.. I've got a question for anyone here who owns leos or other mealworm-eaters. He really enjoys them, and i'm going through this pack pretty fast. A lot of them have already turned into pupae, so i took the pupae out and put them in a separate container.. I want *some* of them to turn into beetles so they'll breed.. but most of them seem to be transforming, and i'm curious as to whether or not it's safe to feed the pupae and/or beetles to my gecko...?
