Hello gang. I'm going to be picking up my first corn snake tonight. I took the time yesterday to get his home set up and monitor diffrent temperatures around the tank. My terrarium is as follows, 17.5 X 17.5, 17.5. I think it will do for now but @ adult hood I think I'll be getting something a bit bigger unless you guys think it will still be ok. He has a heating pad under the tank on the right side. Average temp in center of the tank is 80F. It a bit warmer in the corner where I have one cave set up and colder on the other side where another cave is set up. I have my lights set up as one is dayglo and the second is night glo. The lights are in the same ballast. The reason I have 2 diffrent bulbs in there is for lighting effect so that it's not too bright in there. I get the benefit of extra heat off the night glo bulb too without light. There is also a water dish on the cold side of the tank(left side). Some of the water dish touches the heat pad. But water temp stays @ 75F. The substrate I'm using is reti-bark as well with moss as decor. I'm also gonna add some branches and vines tonight. How does it sound gang? Oh and one more thing I forget to tell you my corn snakes name Orvil. So if any of you have any tips or advice just let me know. The young corn is also trained to eat frozen pinkies. I plan on feeding him every 10 days from what I have read from care sheets. Anyways like I said before any advice will be greatly accepted. Thanks eveyone.

Hi and welcome.

When you say 17.5, Is that inches?

If so that's definately not big enough for an adult, when they get to full size you'd be looking at keeping them in something nearer 36*18*18 or around that size.

Sounds like you've got a nice set up. Make sure you check the temps at the extremes and not the middle to be sure you have a nice greadient from the mid-high 80's at the HOT end, working it's way down to the mid-70's at the cool end.

Also, it's a bit bigger than I use, so plenty of plants and also toilet roll tubes are get for giving your new snake places to hide and roam around.

How old is the snake you're getting? If it's a new CB08, I'd suggest feeding 1 thawed pinkie every 5-7 days, and then as they get older and the prey items get bigger take it to feeding once every 10-12 days.

Other than that it all sounds good.

What morph corn snake are you getting?

Any other questions feel free to chuck them at us

Regards,

Mitch

Yes 17.5's are in inches. My Temp goes as follows, 85F hot end, 80F center and mid 70's on the colder side of the vivarium. There are many diffrent temps all around the tank. I actually think it's almost perfect. I'm using a regular thermometer at the moment and moving it around monitoring it. What should I do at night time? Should a get a timer for the lights and heat pad. Or turn the lights out all together and just lower the heating pad on a dimmer. Personally I think I can just turn the lights off. I turned them off last night and put the thermometer in there so that I could get a read of the cold end and it was in the low 70's. Is that enough of a temp change for night? Obviously with the heat pad on the hot end stayed at 85F and center went down to 75F with cold end 70F. Is this ok. I just want everything to be perfect for the little guy.

It sounds fine mate.

I personally don't lower the temps at night. But as I'm in England the ambient tempretures are lower at night and cause a slight cooling effect in the viv, which seems to be perfect.

As for your Terrarium, is it glass all the way around? Is so I suggest that you get some sort of background to cover 3 of the sides.

When I first got my corn it looked like this:

And she was very quiet and didn't move around much. So when all my vines and that turned up (they were late) and now it looks like this and she's SOOO much happier:

My vivarium is the same exoterra tank like your Mitch. Mine has a rock backgound made of foam. It came with the vivarium. I also have plants covering both sides of the vivarium. Hopefully I can get my digital cam running so I can show you guys.

Mine came with a rock background, but I took it out as I have a phobia of Polystyrene (Styrofoam).

Sounds like you've got it all sorted :)

As for the water if you've got it on the heatmat I'd change it every day, keeps it fresh and you'll notice a fair bit evaporates to keep the humidity up :)

As for humidity, it should be fine without anything doing really. But when he comes into shed it might be an idea just to spray the viv gently just to keep the humidity up and to help aid the shed :)
