Hello! I'm Donna from Michigan, USA.
I just bought a corn snake today and I was wondering if you could help me identify its coloring? I know it's about to shed, so it's difficult to see the color well. It's about 1 1/2 years old, according to the shop employee. I got it from a small pet shop, not a large chain store.
In the past, my husband and I had an Austrailian Spotted Python and very briefly snake-sat for a ball python.
But I've always wanted a corn snake and now our 8 year old daughter is really getting into snakes, so I thought we'd give this guy/gal a home.
So, main question: what color is it?
Also, I plan on doing more research, but if someone wouldn't mind just briefly refreshing my memory: How long does it take them to shed and is it ok to handle them around this time if they aren't too irritable?
As far as feeding, it's eating thawed mice. Should I put the snake in a smallish box and give it the mouse that way? When do I return it to the tank, after its swallowed the wole mouse?
Thank you in advance, this seems like a great place and I look forward to sharing and learning!

Your snake is a classic / wild-type / normal. It is typical to give a new snake at least 7 days to settle in. In your case, I'd wait until he has shed, which will probably be closer to 14 days. Missing a meal won't hurt him; his body condition is great.

Welcome and congrats on taking on a beautifully, gorgeous animal! He looks real healthy and well-fed also!

Yeah, you might wanna wait until he swallows the mouse and gets it ALL the way down into his stomach, which can actually take a few minutes, prior to handling or returning him to his enclosure. When I feed my snakes, I wait for about 5-to-10 minutes AFTER you can no longer see the lump the mouse makes which travels slowly down the neck. That way, it ensures that the snake is not still in the process of swallowing when you return him or her to its enclosure. As far as the "feeding box" to place it in, everyone has their own method, but I feed my snakes in a secure tub which is large enough for the snake to swallow its prey comfortably, but small enough for the snake not to lose sight or the presence of its prey if it doesn't seize upon it immediately. For your size snake, an 18-24" tub would probably be fine. Of course, make sure it secures your snake appropriately as they are MASTERS at the art of escape!! I'm sure you'll get the hang of it after feeding it a couple of times. But as Shiari stated, you'd probably be helping him out by letting him get adjusted for a couple of weeks first. Certainly couldn't hurt!

Later!
