Hey all. I got an Okatee Corn about two weeks ago. He is a little guy, about 15". He has started shedding and is always under the substrate. The only time he isn't hiding underneath the substrate is when I feed him, which has been 2 large pinkies a week. Is it possible he is too hot? I have an infrared bulb always on, sitting directly on top of the screened lid, which heats the left side of the tank. My apartment is always between 70-75degrees so I know the minimum amount of heat is there. I have two hiding places for him; a paper towel roll cut in half. One side is somewhat buried on the hot side, and the other on the cold side. He seems to prefer burrowing into the chips, however. Besides all the hiding, he seems to be doing great!

Welcome- Cornsnakes are great.

First off, it's spelled Okeetee...not Okatee for the Okeetee Hunt Club in South Carolina.

You asked if it's too hot... Well, how hot is it (ie what is the temp by the substrate on the hot side)? What are the temps on the cool side? How large is the tank? Does the snake normally hide on the 'hot side' or on the "cold side"?

Too often people DON'T have thermometers in their tanks...or they are placed 1/2 to 3/4 way up the wall close tot he bulb (which gives a fake temp reading since the snake is down on the bottom).. Handheld temp guns are great for checking cage/animal temps.

Usually if the snake is always hidding on the hot side you should double check temps to make sure the tank has an adaquete hot spot... the same applies if it's always hidding on the cold side (MAY be a sign that the tank is too warm)..

Just a few things you might consider... Good luck with it.

I just reread my message. Please don't feel I was coming off "harsh"...I didn't mean for it to sound that way. Just trying to help out some. Cornsnakes are very hardy and usually thrive under captive conditions. Double check you actual cage temperatures if your worried about it being too hot.

Thanks!

Welcome, Lone Star State.
When I first came to this site I thought the Okeetees were the best looking pattern, they just looked to me the way a snake "should" look. I soon found out that there are so many beautiful morphs and all of them look fantastic.

Read, read ,read. There is an incredible amount of info here. First off, read the faq page in the "husbandry and basic care" forum. Use the search feature, almost everything has been asked and answered.

Ask away, it's a very nice bunch of people here with a lot of accumulated experience. Ha, so nice that Strange Cargo posted a follow up apologizing for a post that "may have sounded too harsh"(didn't BTW).
