Hi,

I have an under tank heater, does the depth of the substrate affect the temp much? I have bark at over an inch deep. I don't have a regular thermometer but have a sticker type thermo at each end and during the day with the light on my temp is fine, just worried about those few hours over night (room is usually around 75, but could dip a bit).

Thanks

imho:the type and amount of substrate can possibly affect the heat of the under tank heater. my rule imho: more substrate less heat at top of substrate, less substrate more heat. hope this helps

Yes it definately does make a difference!

If you can't stick a thermometer on the surface of the hot end you'll have to observe your snake until you get one.

If it's too hot he'll always be near the air vents, on the cool side or in the water. If it's too cold he'll always be sitting on the warm spot. If he moves around at different times then it's probably OK.

Snakes can burrow in bark, and I'd expect that your snake would figure out that if he dug deep it'd be warmer.

My snake has never burrowed in the hot end ... only in the cool.

Try and get a thermometer, or maybe putting your strip one by the surface, perhaps horizontal.

Oh yeah, an inch seems about right
