So I recently became of possession of two corn snakes and a Kenyan sand boa in July due to a neighbor deciding she was going to up and leave her home long story short she gave me multiple animals on top of the snakes due to her wanting to rehome them since then I’ve grown attached to the snakes and she’s now having her boyfriend message my fiancé trying to get the snakes back and truthfully the snakes weren’t the best taken care of but were definitely less neglected then the other animals she gave me but I’m wondering what I can legally do to keep the snakes because I know she only wants them back to sell them because she has court soon and needs to pay 500 for her fees and that was the original message. I don’t want this to be a legal issue and cause more issues for myself but in good conscience and with love I don’t want to let my new snake babies go back. Any advice would greatly be appreciated and for reference I live in Virginia as far as I know she’s not registered them and she bought one or two from a pet store and another from what sounds like a backyard breeder.
