New Racks

I finally put them together last weekend. I bought the wood and tubs about a month ago. I cut the wood to size at my father-in-laws and sat it in the basement. I really like the outcome. Especially for the price of the wood. Ten bucks is what the wood cost. Any who here they are.

They look good  If you don't mind, I was curious about what brand and model number (or size, if you don't know the model #) those tubs are? Thanks!

they look great Austin. how many strips of heat tape are you using for each tub?

Man, I need to make racks! Good job!

let me know if you need a hand with building them. I will be starting some new wookd working projects, but have all the power tools that you will need.

The tubs are 32 quart Sterolite. I'm not sure of the model number.

Alright!!! I'll be talking to you about that when I'm getting ready to look into making them then. (Next month or two?) I am not crafty or in possession of any building-type knowledge at all. I would love to make some good workable racks for all my corns, especially since they are getting bigger. I'm going to be moving them from Iris sweater boxes to Iris CB-70(?) underbed boxes. I've been using heat cables, but need to upgrade to heat tape as well. Ugh.
Cheers!

Howdy Rocky!
To me its both. Having 30 Aquariums, each with its own uth and stand, is just not a good option for me. With racks, I can take them out and spend time with them by just sliding the clear tub from the shelf. I've also noticed (IMO) that critters don't seem to enjoy a wide open viewing glass aquarium type set up as much. They're more skittish and don't seem to think they are hiding as well; and it seems that the clear tubs let them be more comfortable as they look at you standing there peering in, or as a cat/dog goes by. (At least that has been my observation.) I do agree that having more than 10 does reduce the time I can spend with each of them considerably. I still wouldn't consider my collection as just a collection, and not pets that I love and interact with. Just some thoughts, didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Thats cool I guess. Not really for me, because at that point its a collection, instead of pets. my .02 .....

Rocky, I was like you when I first started. I couldn't see how anyone could have their snakes in bins that weren't very see through. But as the number of my pets grew and I got more serious about hobby breeding, I realized that having more than a couple of 20 to 30 gal aquariums was not feasable, no matter how large of a house you have. A rack system is just like a book shelf that you can put in a room as Furnature. It takes up little space, and allows you to keep snakes in a very easy manner. Temp for all of them is controlled by one or 2 thermostats instead of one for each tank. You don't have to have them spread through out your house in different rooms because of space, and it is actually easier to keep track of, feed, and spend time with them when all you have to do is slide the bin off the shelf instead of taking all the lighting fixtures off the top of an aquarium and then opening the lid, sifting through the substrate to find the snake, etc.

I have noticed, just like Kimbyra, that my snakes tend to not burry themselves when in a rack system where as when they were in aquariums, they were burried all the time. Mine are less flighty and have a reduced tendency to adopt a defensive pose when I go to get them out of the rack versus a glass aquarium. But, to each his own. Everyone is going to have different opinions and if you only have 2 or 3 snakes, then by all means keep them in glass if that works for you.

I recently went from fish tanks to rack and you wouldn't believe how much space you save. My entertainment center actually looks like one not a pet shop. Which means i can get more. I personally keep the lids on just for added security and i just tape a piece of paper on the to to keep track of feedings and sheds. Its worked out great for me.

Looking good Austin!

On the right, second tub up, is that a snake bathing or is it a shadow in the water bowl? I can't wait to see Elektra do that!

I hear you and I understand as a breeder having that many, but I am talking about for just a casual owner having bins. But as long as they are healthy, happy and well fed thats the important part.

Yup she was bathing. I have a couple snakes that like to sit in the hot tub after a long day at work. lol No but seriously they just started doing this after I got them bigger water bowls. They kept knocking over the smaller ones. I guess they were trying to tell me to get them a bigger hot tub. :grin01:

Info on those racks

Any chance you could send me the "blueprints" on those racks. My collection of snakes keeps growing. Currently I have 9 aquariums set up with snakes, 1 with toads, and 1 with mice. HELP me please, LOL. thanks
