So I bought Britney a new scalehead. She is a Suriname Boa and holy crap is she friendly...Since she's pretty much a hatchling I expected her to be nippy and very defensive, but she just chills and sniffs everything. Very Sweet.

Unfortunately she came with mites, so we're learning to deal with our first mite infestation.

She's adorable. Sorry to hear about the mites, but at least you're clearing it up. Must keep a progression thread!

Hatchling?! Lol, boas don't lay eggs :)

Just giving you a hard time. I love baby boas. Nothing in the world cuter than they are.
My friends gave me their boa a few months back because she wouldn't eat for them, turned out mites were sucking her dry. I have her a short soak in room temp water with dawn dish soap (one drop into the water only). It breaks the water so that it can get into the small grooves in the snake's scales. This drowns mites.
She also had a lot of eye caps that came off with a bit of help after the soak and dozens of mites were behind them!

Once the soak was over, I just placed her in a Tupperware that had been treated with Provent a mite and all her issues were resolved in four days!

So that is roughy my advice to you :)

Enjoy your boa!! I know I love mine

We brought her home Thursday and immediately gave her a 20 min bath in plain water. After that we gave her another bath in water with olive oil, we'd had several people recommend it to us.

Normally we want to respect the "Leave her alone for a week to acclimate." rule, but she's seen a lot of handling as we check her for mites and change out her bedding (towels) and clean her tank every day. After a 30 minute inspection tonight we couldn't find a mite on her. We're planning to give another bath tomorrow to make sure we get any leftover eggs. Fingers crossed, we might have gotten the little buggers pretty quick.

Otherwise we were thinking to try HypoAspis mites if the problem continues. So far I've found people reporting REALLY good results.

We're also observing isolation protocols and being REALLY careful not to spread the mites to Igneous or Khell.

We're really happy though, so far our herps have all been awesome and she's looking to be great too. Very little defensive behavior and she's active when held, but doesn't try to flee. Heck she comes right up to our noses!
