New set-up

I just returned from Petsmart with a bevy of supplies. I wanted to see if you all approved of what I got. :) I don't have the snake yet, so now is the perfect time to make bad decisions if I'm going to make them.

I picked up an Exo-Terra aquarium with a mesh top and sliding front doors. It's 18"x18"x18". I know that's not really going to be long enough when he reaches adulthood, and he doesn't need the extra height, but it's the only locking one they had. ;) The gap in front seems too small for a baby, but there are holes around the top that are big enough, so I thought I could tape them over or something? I also have no furniture at the moment that it'll fit on, so I'll have to deal with that.

I got aspen bedding, a bottle of dechlorinator, some frozen pinkies, a UTH (Zoo Med), a plastic rock water bowl, a half-log hide, a fake plant, and a plastic log hide that can be climbed on. And yes, all this crap set me back some money. :)

Anyway, I don't have a light because the whole light scene confused me. I picked up a thermometer at Target yesterday--it's like a meat thermometer (with the metal prong) but digital. I'm currently working on getting everything soaked in a bleach solution to be sure there's no "crud" on there before someone moves in. And no, I have no idea where the snake is even coming from at this point. ;)

So...what do you think?

Sounds all good except for the sliding doors.

Hell, one of my girls is just a yerling and fit through the gap in sliding doors!! So i have to tape that at all times as she still tries to esape.

I wouln't recommend tape inside vivs at all, or anywhere that the snake can come into contact with the sticky side as this can cause scale damage.

Although, sliding doors are much better to get your snake out the viv as most snakes see predators as big monsters coming from above. Meshtop access can cause the snake to be nervous due to this instinct.

However you have both so i wouldn't worry :)

I know what you mean about over spending, all my snakes and other creatures and extremely spoiled :( And to be honest is it not at all necessary, but why the hell not spoil them eh ;)

Good luck with aquiring your corn. Hatchlings are everywhere now so im sure you will have no problemo finding one :)

I have one of those smaller ones. Their not an aquarium. Those holes are small enough to let any little corn out. I hate the viv. Yea tape over them, but on the outside. As for the doors. Mine swing open but have a little locking mechanism. They can't get out the front. But they will figure out how to get out the top through the holes. I swear these vivs were ment for lizards and geckos NOT snakes. Well at first. As for th thermometer. I would recommend a corded one, this allows more climbing area as a baby. And this can be threaded those those holes. i used a little pice of wood to keep the sliders for the cords up top jammed shut and taped over.

Well, the rule of thumb, as I understand it, is to not have a gap as big as the baby's snout. The front gap really doesn't seem big enough--it's practically hairline. But of course, I can tape it, too. I was thinking, with the others, of using double tape--tape inside with the outside of the tape in the tank, and then another (maybe) on the top, so the snake wouldn't be touching the sticky side. I guess I'll just have to see what's the best way by messing with it. ;)

There are no snakes at Petsmart, I know that--the two near me. There are Petcos...I haven't been to one of those yet. There was supposedly a reptile store near here, but I drove over there and found nothing. And the other reptile place is by appointment only on the other side of town, so I think, either way, this is going to be a huge pain. Our temperatures here would prohibit shipping (they usually won't ship if the temperature's 95 or above, and it usually is).

You can always silicone something over the holes and it's much safer than tape, make sure you use the stuff for aquariums. If the gap bothers you, you can always put something in it, I saw a thread where someone used the little plastic paper binders on the doors edges, closing the gap. I would save that thermometer for the BBQ and get one of those plastic digital ones that suction cup to the outside of the tank and run the cord with the plastic probe into the tank through a hole before you silicone it. The dechlorinater is good, but all the other stuff in the water makes me nervous so I just buy spring water... I would get a thermostat or rheostat for the UTH and a piece of glass or tile to stick it to so when you upgrade to a larger size you can just move it instead of buying another. Use the feet that come with the UTH to raise the tank above the tile/glass piece so you have extra protection from your little guy getting burnt... That's all I can think of so far, good luck...

I just put all the stuff in the viv. It's still not done, of course. I need furniture to put it on, for example (it's on the floor right now). Oh, and I need a snake. :D But I put everything in there, anyway.

The little rock wall wouldn't fit. Ho hum. I put duct tape over the holes in the back. It's harder to get the lid on with it there, but it goes on with a bit of a push and the little catches catch, so it's still solid. Also, a piece of rubber stripping came loose somehow, so I put a strip of tape over that to keep it from falling again.

I would highly recommend taking out the "rock" backround theres space in the back where if the snake burrows it could get stuck back there.

Just as an fyi, I work at petsmart and those exo terra terrariums are really pretty, but I know that my store has terrariums with tops that slide in which can then be either locked with an small padlocked or just twisty tied. They're really good since there's virtually nowhere that the snake can escape in one of those guys.

Until it is slightly longer than the longest side. How long it takes to get to that point vaires from snake to snake.
