new "shelf system"

I have been a little bit concerned about my baby corn in her 20 g long tank. It has been a little bit difficult trying to compromise between too much open space and too much clutter. Depending on what source you refer to, either one could be considered a bad thing (I am sure everyone has their own opinion but I am not overly concerned with these musings at present).

I recently acquired a 55 g fish tank from craigslist ($50.00 for the tank, stand, and a ton of filters ph stuff i didn't really need). To be honest, it needed a lot of scrubbing because I think that the previous owner was less than diligent with his cleaning regimen and the lid was unusable (I need a screen lid or I may make one and solder dozens of ventilation holes into it) but I feel like it was well worth it.

Anyhow, I have been wondering how to create some sort of "shelf" so my corn has a place to climb and possibly hang out (as a baby she likes to sit on top of a piece of treated wood that I have been using still). I have read about people using PVC pipe to create shelves or ledges and this intrigued me to try to figure out a similar system:

Basically, it is a corner shower rack w/ large suction cups on the two 90 degree sides which fits perfectly into the corner of a fish tank/aquarium/critter cage. It is currently placed on top of a tall plastic cup, and I intend to use aquarium silicon to secure the suction cups. I bought a long vine of fake silk leaves and wove it into a grid on the 'front' of the shower rack - it is relatively secure and it will hold my corn's weight but i will most likely use some more silicone to help hold it in place. I had some extra fake plant leaves and vines and I just kind of stuck them into any hole that I could squeeze them into and would not pull back out without a lot of work. There is also metal wire which poked through the plastic of the vine, and i again used a big glob of silicon to cover the exposed ends.

I am going to try it out in my 20 g tank with the cup that is in the picture. If I decide that it works I will be most likely be looking for something more aesthetically pleasing than my faux chinese restaurant cocktail glass.

I will make sure it is safe and secure before I let my girl play around on it, but I wanted to see if anyone that that it would (or wouldn't :headbang:) work out. If not, I may be very interested in checking out a pvc system if anyone could be so kind.

P.S. I did not intend for this post so be so long or involved, but I got caught up in it (as I desperately procrastinate the writing I should be doing lol)

That looks pretty good to me, I'm assuming that is the view from the back and it would be covered by the vines etc, when viewed from the front?

If so, have you thought about using the corner bowl up the right way, so that she can curl up in it like a tree top retreat, which is then covered by the vines, she may enjoy that too.....just thinking out loud :)

Either way, I think it's a great idea, if structurally sound :D

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, that was a view from the outside of the front right corner of the 55 g. I detached the shelf and took a shot from the front:

I am holding it, you can see my hand on the left. The vine actually hangs down 20" so I will be able to secure it pretty high in the tank and my corn will be able to get up there. I think the best part of the whole contraption is that it will be adjustable as long as I can find a taller substitute to the plastic cup (a cut section of 2' x 4' could work).

That is a good idea about the water bowl. I have a corner bowl which would fit on top of it, I would just need to make sure that it was secured there because I would worry about it falling off. Of course, that would mean that refilling the water would be a bit more complicated.;)

That corner shelf is a great idea. I agree with Susie turn it right side up. I like the tiki glass idea but maybe lay it on it's side again so snakies can crawl in it. Dang now I have to go to Walmart (hate that store), I have a 55 gal divided for for my 07' Ambers and have been trying to think of a shelf idea, your idea is perfect.
