New Snake Mama

Hello! I'm a new corn snake mama, I got the OK from my husband to get one for a Mother's Day present yesterday. I have been thinking about getting one off & on for a few months. My daughter's bearded dragon passed away last month so we moved the tank out of her room & re-arranged it for a snake.

Shesha has spent most of his 1st day (no clue if it's a him or a her, but I'm calling him him) hiding but he was very active last night after I turned his heat light off. This AM when I woke up, he was still exploring. I turned on the light & he went to hide. Tomorrow night I'll feed him a f/t pinkie. My kids were amazed I could buy frozen mice.

I'm not sure what the coloring is and I can't figure out how to add a picture on here. Best I could find from pics online is a reverse Okeetee. His eyes are black (no red- Red eyes freak me out)

Yeah - figured it out!!

Hi Glimmer, welcome. Great gift for mother's day. My snake actually belongs to my wife, but all she does with her is hold her.
I think you have an amelanistic baby there, but I'm not so well versed on young corns ID, they change a lot.
Try looking at Ian's Vivarium for pics to compare for yourself

Hi Glimmer! That is a beautiful snake!
I'm new here, too, but let me tell you, for a bunch of snake geeks, these folks rock! I had been given the warmest welcome, so I want to pass that on....you'll love it here.
Happy Mother's day!

Thanks~ I'm logged into Ian's site now too. :) There's some great photos, but I thought amelanstics had red eyes. I'm learning about all the color & pattern variations. Shesha's been hiding all day... the new mom in me wants to worry but I figure once the lights are off, he'll come out. I'm sitting on my hands to not uncover his hide & check on him.... I know he needs alone time to adjust.

Oh, and I mean "snake geek" with the utmost respect. I'm a wannabe geek. ;)

Geeks are good ... I married one!! Not a snake geek, just the normal techie kind.

I'm hoping to find a bunch of answers to my newbie questions here. I have an online friend with a lavendar morph and will be asking her a million questions too!

Hi and welcome. Yes amels have red eyes, no expert here but hypo possibly. A word of caution, do not feed your snake tomorrow. It is too soon, you should let it settle in for 4-5 days before handling of any kind. Then feed it in seperate tub, gently put back in tank and no handling for 48 hours after eating. You might want to read the stickies at the beginning of health and feeding section. If this is a hatchling I wouldn't suggest holding for your pleasure until after it has eaten at least three meals for you.

Thanks susang.. I'm reading everything I can & get mixed info. 4-5 days would be Tues-Wed. I'm not sure when he ate last. I asked the clerk at the petstore and she said they had just got them in the night before & they hadn't fed them yet.

I'll look up pictures of hypos now!

Yup Wednesday would be good to feed, just make sure he has water. If you must change water do it without disturbing snake as much as possible.
The possibility of you causing a regurg greatens at this poit if you handle or try to feed him. The very last thing you want is a regurging snake.
As for mixed info, the faq sheet (stickies) on this forum, Kathy Love's and Don Sodaberg's books would all tell you to wait to handle or feed. A snake can go a long time without eating.
It's also too bad the petstore sold it to you before knowing if it was a good eater, something no reputable breeder would do. Unless they specifically tell you they are selling you snakes have't eaten yet.
Ususally a corn snake hatches, they don't eat for aroud 10-12 days, until after they shed. The breeder would then offer a pinkie, if it eats they wait 4-5 days feed again...after 3 successful, consecutive feedings they sell them. All of this may vary some, but not much.

Wednesday will work well for me, I've got stuff going on Mon-Tues night so Wed night I'll be free at home & can defrost the pinkie. I've been changing the water during the day while he's hiding.

My husband & I were out at dinner with some friends last night at the time I would turn the light off, so I sent a text to my 16 yr old to do it. When we got home, my middle child (11 yrs old) told me that 3 minutes after Holly turned the light off, Shesha came out to explore. He was out when we got home at 10pm. He went back to hide when after we got home, but he wasn't all the way back hiding - he was towards the front and was "sitting up" (coiled with head lifted, still checking things out).

His tank is in the corner of the living room & the living room is a VERY active spot. We have kids coming over to play XBox and 4 little boys playing WWE, with lots of noise & action has sent ME into hiding!! He's becoming a little more brave each day though!!

Welcome to the forum! Hope you can post pics of your snake soon as I know we all would love to see him :0) and good luck on his first feeding..Make sure when you feed him you put him in a private area or room where he can have some peace and quiet to eat..A lot of action around them while trying to feed sometimes gets them nervous and they could possibly refuse...

Thanks Maize411! I'm planning on feeding him when the kids are in bed, after I turn his light off (when he comes out of hiding).

I've backed off on taking photos of him. I'll get more when he's used to us.
