Hello everyone!

I'm Jess and about two weeks ago, my husband and I picked up our very first corn, an okatee born in June. Here is our earliest photo of Damballah.

So far, he's happily munched down two pinkies last week and is going blue as we speak! Here you can see part of his vivarium. I found him in the bottom of the planter in the background last night, underneath the orchid!

We are really enjoying having him around, before he went blue he was pretty social and would cruise around and climb in the orchid. We plan on putting a piece or two of bamboo in for climbing. My husband is planning on making some hypertoofas; a lightweight and breathable concrete planter for hides and dishes soon.

Cool! Welcome! My next corn will be an Okeetee. Almost snagged one at the Cleveland reptile show two weeks ago, but the timing isn't just quite right yet for #2 in the house.

Welcome to the forums, fellow Ohioan! Everyone here is fantastic. I'm sure you will love it here and learn a ton. And your snake is lovely!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.

ZiggysMom - having him eat so readily really eased a lot of my worries that some horror stories had inflated. Thankfully, the note on him at the shop was that he preferred frozen very early which was a relief to us. Frozen is so much easier to deal with long term.

nfafan - I was waffling over a corn or a ball python when we started looking. While I really like the calm poise of the balls, my husband really went head over heels for the corn and the set up was slightly easier for a first timer like me. Next one will be a ball python. Also, I hear the Cleveland show is the one to go to versus the Columbus one which is much smaller, what was your experience?

I'm hoping to post photos from after his shed in a week or so.

I too went with the corn 1st over a ball python due to affordability - you get a fantastic looking snake for very little money as compared to a fancy BP morph. I probably "over-spent" for a $40.00 albino motley, as you can find gorgeous corns for as low as $15.00 at the shows.

My one/only "snake friend" is all about his half-doz BPs, and I have to agree they are awesome too. They just hang out and chill in your hand.
But as he told me - they can be a bit more difficult for a 1st-timer. He is stunned at how easy my corn is to take care of.

The ease of care is what's helping me, I can keep her "low profile" in terms of expenses, so in that regard; out of sight/out of mind for the wifey. I'll slowly introduce a second corn when the time is ripe.

As for the Cleveland show, I only have the 2 shows in West PA to compare to - the Cleveland show beats them both hands down. I know I'll go back!! My snake-buddy goes to Tinley every year, and he likes the Cleveland show.

It could be worth the trip for you. Good luck and have fun!

The Cleveland show is great! I got my first corn from friends, but went to the show and bought some supplies I needed from there. People are very friendly and take the time to talk to you about stuff. Just a warning though, it may be a little tough for you if you get claustrophobic. It can be a bit cramped and shoulder to shoulder at times when you're walking around (at least that's what it was like the month I went). Welcome! This board is full of wonderful, caring, helpful people. They helped me so much in the beginning when I was full of worry and going though my first experiences with Severus. It's crazy how much you can worry about something so small!

O-H! Welcome to the club! Now you'll have to make the rounds and compare shows...Cbus, Cleveland, Cincy, Taylor, etc.

Thanks guys, we probably won't make it to many shows this year. Our holidays get pretty busy so maybe I can make the rounds once the new year rolls around.

Welcome to the forum! I was just at the Columbus show this weekend and got a baby blue-tongued skink! The Cbus show is kinda small, and there aren't very many corns. I saw lots of amels and normals, with 2 coral ghosts. And also a "butter" corn that was clearly a normal, but I still like to go and look! Also, since you live in Columbus, I know a breeder that's fantastic. I got my first snake from him, and I can give you his email if you want.
