new snake owner in Wichita Kansas

Hello! I'm a 32 yr old divorced mom who finally got my first pet snakes yesterday. They are roughly 4 week old hatchlings, an anery that is hetero for snow motley and an amelanistic motley, both males.

It took a while to find a local source that wasn't a crap pet store. This is still a pet store, but they are bred by (I think he's one of the owners) and I can also buy frozen pinkies there that were humanely euthanized rather than having to mail order in bulk for two tiny snakes. This seems like a big town for such a small selection....

The amel was really defensive so I'm leaving him alone until after he's digested his first meal (scheduled for tonight) but the anery has been pretty calm when I handled him yesterday. The poor amel was exploring his cage in a constant strike position when I first put him in it....

I also have a Labrador, two cats, two gerbils, and an Amazon parrot (DYH). My little boy is 2 1/2 and he likes the snakes but is very happy to not touch them for now.

Cheers! Sherry

welcome Sherry! Did you by chance get your corns from Tails & Scales in Derby?? Yes, i'm from kansas as well happy see a person from my own state.

If you got you corns from tails and scales you don't have to worry about them to much...John breeds most of their kings, milks, rats, corns and ball pythons(john is the guy with dark hair and a gotee) he's a very good breeder and he has more reptiles then other stuff in the shop. I got a ball python from him and she doing great and is in the blue(going to shed) right now

and just to ask did you see any sunglows?(thats if you went to tails and scales)

anyway welcome to the forums glad to have a another kansas person here!!

GO CHIEFS! I know.....other side of the river.......congrats on gettting the new hatchlings, and welcome to the forum. You'll find this is a great place for information.......

Yes, Tails and Scales! Although it's about a 45 mile drive for me, the quality makes it worthwhile. They came highly recommended from a friend of mine who works at a different pet store. He had a few hatchling sunglows I think but they were all running together in my mind :) Those weren't ready to go yet.

And actually.....I'm a little out of my territory, but for me it's "Go Broncos!" originally from CO a long time ago...

Welcome to the boards!

I also bought my first cornsnake from Tails n' Scales a couple weeks ago. It is a baby Amel Motley, I stupidly didn't have him/her sexed. That is a great store, and the people there are great. John threw in 4 free small pinkys with my hatchling which was really cool too. They definitely know their stuff and are very helpful, I definitely recommend a trip there to anyone in south-central Kansas, or anyone else going through the area.

Hey I'm a fellow Kansan, I have purchased majority of my snakes from TnS, love going there can stay for hours. Never realized how many Kansans were on the forum, but welcome and good luck.

You can always get him sexed in the future. I only did it b/c I couldn't decide on one color and didn't want to unexpectedly end up with babies someday! John hadn't sexed any of them yet, I think he's been too busy. I've been glad to see the place busy, would hate to lose a good shop for lack of business (or have them start branching out into other pet store aspects like puppy sales.....which would bother me).
