Hello, I got a 40 gallon breeder tank and it is a bit dirty considering it was a salt water tank before i got it. i got it pretty clean with the hose and some paper towls but i was wondering how to get it more sanitary for my new snake coming Friday.

I used a diluted bleach solution on mine when I cleaned it (converted from fresh water tank to snake vivarium). Just made sure to rinse very well.

how much should i dilute it

Maybe 10:1 or so. You really just need enough bleach to kill any unwanted stuff but not so much that you have to spend half a year rinsing it to get all the bleach off. That being said, the main thing is to make sure you get it rinsed out well afterward.

If it was a saltwater tank, there's probably not too many unsavory things lingering around that are going to be a problem for a snake. There are quite a few environmentally friendly and non-toxic cleaning agents around today that could probably do the job of getting it cleaned up. Simple green is one that comes to mind but there are a lot of others.

I'd put it in the bathtub and place several capfulls of dish washing detergent in the tank. Fill it to the top with hot water and a couple of cups of bleach. Leave it for an hour and then empty the aquarium. Scrub down the aquarium inside and out with a sponge, and then rinse it out several times. Fill it with water, and leave it filled for a few hours. Empty the tank, and clean the glass with a non toxic cleaner or newspapers.
