New to Corn Snakes!

Hello! My name is Shannon, and I've always wanted a snake... but finally have saved up my own money to buy one (I'm 15). I have bought a tank with a secured lid (dimensions are 20"x10") and after research I have ordered two Dome Homes, one 5" Habi-Scape water bowl, analog reptile thermometer, 100 small-large pinkie mice, Repti-Therm under-tank heater, and a 24 quart bag of coconut chips for substrate. These items have not arrived yet, so I am holding off ordering a snake (I have been looking at a few different places), and before it's all said and done I was just wondering if I am missing anything or perhaps peoples opinions/experiences with any of these items? Oh and the place I ordered from is called "Big Apple Herpetological". Any advice is greatly appreciated and welcome.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Shannon! Welcome to the forums! Glad to see you did your homework and researched to get everything set up BEFORE you got your snake! That makes you ahead of alot of adults. LOL Sounds like you've got everything you need to start out with, you might want to add a light later on if you need extra heat or just for showing your new addition off. Keep checking the temps on both sides of the viv to make sure the cool side's not too cool, and the hot side's not too hot, and post a pic when you get your new snake settled in!

Welcome to the corn snake world. It sounds like youre all sorted. Its good you did research, i think a lot of people dont! You might want to add a branch or some plants for climbing but this is just an extra not a neccesity. Good luck on choosing youre new snake and I hope all goes well.

Thanks a lot! I do have a regular lamp, I'm not sure what type of bulb it is though... but I read that they don't need the UV lights so I think it's okay. I also remember reading that they like to climb so I was going to get a stick from outside instead of paying for one (which... in all actuality sounds silly LOL buying a stick) and was going to use oak. Is oak ok? I've seen wild rat snakes (I live in Florida) on pine and oak tree's.

I guess that's all, and thanks again! :wavey:

Oak should be ok but make sure you soak it in a 5-10% bleach solution and leave overnight, then bake in the oven for about 30 mins at gas 200 deg f approx.

Welcome! :)
Did anyone mention "The Cornsnake Manual" by Kathy Love? It would be a great addition to your herp library!

you might want to get another hide box and a branch-i got sandblasted grape vine it was 19.99 but it is worth it - looks really nice-a heat lamps works well to just for when you nne it but i would put an infered buld in because corns are nocturnal- i am stunned by how much info you knowmost people dont think and just say hey i would be bada$$ if i had i snake- :eek1:

Welcome to cornsnakes! Sounds like you've got a great start on learning your stuff (way to go)! We'd love to see pics of your snake when you get it, or even what types you're considering. By the way, congratulations on saving up your money and everything, I know how hard that can be when you're 15...I had to do that to get my iguana. Anyway, good job, and we're glad to have you here. :)

Haha wow thanks a lot for the welcomes and support/advice, I know in some other "cliche's" people aren't always so nice, it really makes a difference :) .

Heh... I actually did buy a third dome home, but was going to use it for my hermit crabs. They only have one terra cotta type hut, which is fine I guess... haha. What exactly would be the importance of a third dome home for 1 snake? I was going to place 1 on each end for a cool and hot area, should there be one in the middle too due to temperature?

Oh... and I'd definately count on pictures :) I am a photo freak and am actually considering going into photography after high school.
