New to Snakes and the forum.... just some simple questions.

First off, My name is Amanda I'm new to the site and I just got my first snake... my family had a snake growing up but I was young and didn't pay any attention to him.

So anyways like I said I just got my snake a few weeks ago, I went on vacation to see my mom and one of my little sisters had 3 snakes someone had given her and she was kind enough to let me have one. I have no idea how old the snake is, what breed or sex. I'm hoping maybe some one here could help me out with all that. We have been home about 2 weeks now and my sister fed him/her right before we left their house..... she gave them each 2 pinkys. Is is about time from him/her to eat again?

Here are some pictures.... I really did the best I could, seeing how hes/shes white I cant get a real good picture. The snake is just a little longer then the tank which is a 20gl long. How old would you say it might be? My mother said she thought the old owners had them for 3 years..... but I'm not sure how much she really knows.

I also have attached some tail pics. I know they are not good but maybe someone who really knows snakes might be able to tell me the sex.

however I DO know its a corn snake. :roflmao:

Any tips or info is greatly appreciated.
I'm looking forward to meeting every one!

oops... I'm sorry I for got the pictures..... here they are....

PS. sorry about the dirty dishes... we just got done eating breakfast haha

That's a snow cornsnake. I'd guess male, but that's just a guess. He's an adult- he ought to be eating a small to medium adult mouse, not pinkies. I guess, if he's been being fed small meals for a while, I'd start him off on a hopper this week, then a small adult next week and see how that goes.

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

As Nanci said you have a nice snow corn. I agree, you need to move him up to bigger food. Follow Nanci's advice and you should do well.

yeah my sister had named him "snow".... how funny... I fell kinda bad now because I know she knew the other 2 where females and kinda wanted to keep this one because she wasn't sure of the sex and wanted a male but he was the only one out of the 3 who hadn't bitten before and I have a little girl so she didn't want me to take the ones who might bit again.

I thought she should have been feeding him larger food and I was planing on getting something bigger for him this time..... so you say 1 larger mouse and then in 2 weeks a full grown mouse..... the should he eat every month or every 2 weeks?

Can you or anyone else tell about how old he is by his size?

The only certain way to know a snake's true sex at that size is to watch them have eggs (when female) or to see him breed with a female who then has eggs. There's also probing that can be done by a professional, but that's not 100%.

An adult should be fed Every week; more often if underweight. The "book" around here on what and how often to feed can be found here: http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50106&highlight=munson+plan

It's hard to tell exact age by size, especially if the snake hasn't been fed often enough; though I wouldn't say that three years old seems wrong for your stunning new acquisition.

Beautiful snake. Snows are my favorite. Congratulations

Sorry. That totally posted wrong. I appologize. Hopefully you can make some sense of it.
Never have I seen that happen before. It quoted wrong. Sorry again.

Well judging from the size of yours, if your sisters are the same size, she may get her wish. Plus many more, that snake is big enough to breed. Any sign your sisters are gravid? Well then maybe they weren't in the same viv?

whoa, you guys are going to have to take it easy on me, I'm not up on the snake talk.... yet.

HAHA

Well it doesnt matter because I have thos one and her other 2 are 4-500 miles aways from me and this guy.

Both her other ones looked the same as in the tail and everything.

I have no idea what "gravid" and "viv" are..... some one help? haha

You should feed him every 10-14 days

Sorry gravid=pregnant, viv=tank or enclosure.
While judging sex by tail shape is not all that accurate, how does she know hers are girls?

ok that sounds good..... if some of you guys could stick around on this post that would be great I'm going to try and get my sister to send me pics of her snakes.

Shes very interested about her snakes but shes only 13 so I don't know if she would get on and not confuse everyone. HAHA

all 3 where in the same tank.... I'm snot sure if any one was/is prego.... when I was there no one looked any bigger then the other.

Shes said.... and I don't know how many holes it might have in it..... but she said that the people who had them before her said that the other 2 where girls and they weren't sure about the white one...I'm guessing they have either laid eggs before or they bought them pre sexed.

well congrats.

Yeah this little guy I have is a trip he has tunnels all through the bedding that pop up in different places through out the tank and at night when everything calms down in the house he will poke his head out and just watch me clean.

Its so cute

Gorgeous snake, congrats on the acquisition. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with Nanci and say it looks like a female tail to me. The taper begins just 4 scales past the vent. :shrugs: FYI, I hate trying to judge sex via tail pictures (but I still give it a try!). :)

well is there another way other the probing and popping?

I'm in the middle of no where in Alabama so I don't know I could find anyone to do those for me.

Popping would most likely not work with a snake that big/old. Probing is fairly accurate, but you'll want to get someone that's done it before. There is also ventral scale counting . . . there's a thread somewhere's around here about it. Basically count the ventral scales from chin to cloaca and cloaca to tip of tail and then subtract tail count from belly count. I believe it was greater than 154 female, less than male. The closer to 154, the less accurate.

Of course THE only 100% accurate way to sex is to visually see the hemipenes of a male and have a female successfully breed and lay viable eggs! ;)
