New to snakes, wondering about prices

I'm planning to get a corn snake in a month or so. I'm wondering what I can expect to pay for a snake. I don't know anything about the color patterns and their rarity / how expensive they are. I'd really like a beautiful snake but I can't be paying $200 for it. Let me know what you think and any suggestions on what to look for or ask for. I plan to get the snake at one of two pretty impressive looking reptile stores in the Denver metro area where I live.

The most common, inexpensive snakes are the normals, amels, and anerys. But if you buy from a pet store you will almost inevitably pay too much. I would look for a local breeder, you should be able to pick up a baby of one of those morphs for around $20.

If you can find one from a local breeder, then $20-$30 is to be expected for your run of the mill corn. If you buy from a breeder online or from a pet shop (Petco, Petsmart, etc), expect to pay around $60-$70 for the same.

Definetly stick to a breeder! For instance I was in a pet-store last night that had an 09 normal hatchling for $70! Waaaay too high! Normals are also fun because they come in such different, beautiful looks and are the cheapest of the morphs.

I would look up your local reptile shows. That way you can see a selection of snakes and prices having more to choose from:)

i live in the denver area too!
i have 2 corns
the first i got from kathy love - the breeder that wrote the book on corns
it was shipped fedex from florida, and i am very pleased with the lavender i got
the second i picked up from craigslist (there are quite a few on there now and i bet you could negotiate a good price - but several ppl warn against CL)
it is an albino corn - very pretty and only cost me 50 dollars, but came with a UTH, cage, hides heat lamp (which i rarely use), aspen bedding, 3 frozen mice, water dish, and a fake plant
great deal
that being said i still like the one better that i got from kathy love
there is the rocky mountain reptile expo going on aug 8th at the merchandise mart
there should be some local breeders there (at least i'd expect)
also there is vmsherp located in colorado - but you'll still have to have him ship them to you (unless he goes to the expo - which i think he has done in the past on occasion) - i've heard of a few ppl on the boards get reptiles from him and have had good results

Personally, I would stay away from the pet stores, personally experience talking here, the snakes there are very over priced, often badly looked after by the pet stores, so badly in fact that even if they got healthy snakes when they came in, by the time you buy them, they are far from healthy, and finally the pet stores often get sickly, genetically weak stock that has been sold to them cheap from questionable sources.

I tell you this because I have purchased 4 corns from 3 different stores in 2 different cities, totaling a purchase cost of $680 before taxes.

Of those 4, 3 had been very ill prior to my purchase, but as is often the case with snakes, there were no outward signs. There were multiple vet trips/medical bills and medications to try to keep just one of them alive. 2 of them died before they could be helped and luckily the 4th, so far seems to be ok.

All in all, if you add up purchase costs, travel costs (herp vet is 1.5 hrs away, one way), vet costs, money wise, pet store corns have cost me $980 for 3 dead snakes. And countless hours of worry, extra care and heartache at the loss of each one.

I knew all the main things to look for, mouth sores, un shed skin, mites, kinks, retained eye caps, obvious sores or injuries, firm body, good muscle tone, ability to slither properly, frequent tongue flicking, poo in viv is not runny or smelly, ect.

Because snakes are masters at disguising illness for long periods of time and then "out of the blue" seem to fall ill, the one that was purchased from stores with 30 day guarantees, the guarantee was no good as he got ill after 30 days and the other two, that store would not guarantee either.

What I have since learned is that a good breeder will help you out if problems arise, many will often replace an ill animal, and they always make every effort to ensure the animal is feeding, and growing, and appears to be healthy. They keep their snakes in proper husbandry conditions.

All around I will from here on out, push people to run, run fast and far from purchasing snakes or any reptile for that matter from a pet store.

Just my experience, and many other's from what I have read!

A good thing to do before you get your snake is look through the various threads on the cultivars, photo gallery, and individual forums. There are so many great pics of all the different morphs, it will help you to decide which one you like. Remember, the adults are going to look completely different than the babies, so looking at everyone's pics will help you to see what your future snake will look like. For the breeders' forums, you can look at their price lists for the various morphs to get an idea of what you might be paying (can help you decide which morph to go with :))

Good luck, and welcome to the wonderful obsession of corn snakes!

There is such a range of prices. Even for under $100 you can find quite a variety. Normals, amels, anerys, snows, caramels, hypos, lavenders, etc...

However, in pet stores you are going to find there is quiet a markup on the snakes, unless they breed them thereselves.

I looked up reptile expos for Colorado and found that on August 8th is the Rocky Mountain Reptile Expo in Denver. I'd probably check this out for your best deal on a good snake. I looked at the vendor list and there are quite a few with cornsnakes.

The rocky mountain reptile expo in August would be a good place to find a corn, I am not sure if I will have a table as my corns are just hatching out and I will not sell them until they have eaten at least 3 times, so I don't know if I will have enough to justify a table. VMS (Sean) won't have a table there but is a great breeder and has been in this business for a long time.
Let me know if I can help.
John
