Hi everyone. I have been reading about snakes for a while now and just recently found this forum (and I'm very glad I did). I do not own a snake as of yet due to my living arangments, however once I move into a more pet friendly apartment complex I plan on purchasing my first snake. I started out looking at Ball Pythons, and after some research concluded that a corn snake might be a better choice as everyone says they are the best begginer snake. I have been searching through past posts and am finding them very helpful. I do have a few rookie questions though, that I have not found in past posts (although I'm sure they have been asked many times before.) Any information would be greatly appreciated.

#1 I know buying from a quality breeder is the ideal way to obtain a snake, however is purchasing a corn from a chain store like PetCo, or Petmarket a suitable choice as well? For me, the color and pattern isn't a huge issue, im sure i'll be happy with what ever fellow I end up with. So, is there any disadvantage to buying from a chain other than selection?

#2 Does anyone here own a Ball Python as well as a corn snake, and could let me know the basic differnces in owning them?

#3 Lastley I have noticed people refer to the number of snakes they own, or are selling using decimals? such as 2.1 or .1 I know they arent selling one tenth of a snake, is .1 = to one snake?

Sorry to make this so long, and thank you for any help.

Welcome!

Well most people who want to buy from a breeder will also be breeding their animals in the future. But if you buy from a breeder you have a better chance of knowing it's history: genetics, shedding schedule, eatting schedule.
There are also guarentees with breeders, that tend to last a lot longer than at the petstores and of course the conditions don't tend to be as sanitary (of course this varies store to store). Not to mention your selections are very limited at the pet store.
BUT if you go to a reptile show you'll see so many breeders lots of choices of snakes and that way you won't have to pay for shipping.

I can't answer this personally but I read a lot how balls are such finicky eatters. Balls of course get bigger/thicker than corns.

TENTH OF A SNAKE GET YOUR TENTH OF A SNAKE RIGHT HERE :grin01:
Ok enough making fun of you lets take my signature for example.

The numbers are as follows male.female.unknown.
So I have 0.1 corn who is a female
I have 9.12.1 birds so I have 9 males 12 females and 1 unknown.

Hope that helps.

Hi and Welcome:
I have 2 Petco snakes bought as hatchlings I bought 3 one died, the problem with them or any chain is you probably don't know what sex you are getting, color morph, how they are eating... Even petshops can be a gamble for the same reasons. Breeders will know sex, have feeding records... Breeder doesn't equate with big$$$ just higher quality.
1.1.1 is one male. one female, one unknown sex
All I know about Ball Pythons is some have troble getting started eating. g
good luck, susan

Oh wow, I would have never have guessed that the numbers were representing the sex. A reptile show would be very interesting to see, I wonder if there is a website that has a listing of when and where reptile shows will be? Thanks for the advice/knowledge.

Hi! In the back of reptile magazine they list all the upcoming shows. I looked at my latest issue and there is one in Nevada coming up in October in Las Vegas--don't know how close that is for you--but the e-mail address for contact info is [email protected]. Maybe they could give you local info on shows. There's also lots in California--check out www.irba.com.

#1 If your not specific about the corn, many folks here started with "Chain Petstore" corns that do just fine...If you enjoy knowing the background of your snake and want to find the more unusual types of corns then a private breeder is the way to go...If you enjoy this site you'll find plenty of breeders with "cutting edge" stuff, and they'll point you towards other reputable sites with even MORE breeders...

#2 Ball pythons make GREAT first snakes, providing you are willing to do a lot of research in regards to keeping and acquiring the right ball python...I've kept several; each one with their own "quirks" that you learn to deal with to keep them healthy...

#3 you've already learned :)
