Need to learn it all.
My name is Alexis, I am finally able to purchase a snake now with no complaints. I bought a book on corns the other day, but still confused. What should i do under tank heating, bulbs.humidity. Does anyone have suggestions on the best tank set up? I would like to have everything right before getting a corn. Someone told me never buy pets from a pet store, Any truth to this? If so know anyone in NJ or a respected breeder? Please anything would be greatfully appreciated.

Welcome to the site!!!!!!!! There are a lot of great people here. Everybody is always willing to help.
Be sure to read the FAQ section in the forums. They answer a lot of questions. There is a search feature that answers many questions.


It is ok to buy from a reputable pet store. Just make sure that the animal is healthy before you it.

You may not find a lot of breeders in NJ because dark colored corns are illegal there (protected). But you can still have the pink / red eyed types such as snows, blizzards, amels. Plus you can have lavenders. There are some breeders in the NYC area. And some shows up your way too.

Corns are not too picky. As long as you do the basics as you will find on the FAQs here (and on my care sheet on my website also), you will have a good start. Once you have had time to read through all of the FAQs and some of the questions on the forums, let us know if you still have some specific questions (it can be difficult to properly answer something that is really broad and requires a whole book chapter for a good answer, lol!), and somebody will try to help out, I am sure.

HEY a fellow New Jersey snake fan! Hello and welcome to the site..You couldn't have picked a better site to choose to learn about the care, upkeep, and just love of corn snakes...The F&Q area does help answer A LOT of beginning questions...as for basics...Under Tank heater is best (light bulbs are said to make corns go blind and heat rocks can hurt the snake)..Humidity never needs to be to high except during shedding..and even then you only need it at about 50 percent..have a hide on the cool side and the warm side, use a secure lid (since snakes can be little escape artists) When you first get the snake, let it get adjusted to it's new home for a few days..as for buying at pet stores...there are various opinions about this...I bought my first one from "PetsMart" and got a great snake..Never has missed a feeding and is very healthy and friendly to boot...my second one "Striker"..I got from a reptile show..He also has never missed a feeding and is much bigger then Maize...He is also very healthy but I do have reason to believe he wasn't handled much as a hatchling since he's not so keen on handling time...So it all comes down to your preference..My best advice..when getting one from a pet store..check it and make sure it's free of parasites or other bad physically obvious illnesses..Ask them when the last time it ate and could they possibly show you a feeding so that you can see that it is a good feeder..Well welcome and good luck...great to see someone from my neck of the woods for once :0) :grin01: :grin01: :grin01: :grin01:
