New version Generic Genetic Wizard

I have updated to a new version where incomplete dominance of Ballpython morphs is supported.

Have fun!

What about multiple alleles on the same locus - like Mojave and Lesser ?

The example shown with the Cinnamon Butters doesn't look correct, either - because Butter is a codominant trait and you wouldn't get "possible hets" - you'd either see that you had a visual Butter (or butter-based morph) or you wouldn't have Butter at all.

I've downloaded it and will test it. I like a lot of things about the earlier version and dislike some things.

Here are the main things I will be looking for:
Can it can use upper case letters to symbolize dominant and codominant mutants?
Can it can use the symbols in Pritzell's Cornsnake Morph Guide?
Can it handle more than 3 alleles?

No,

You want:

Amel AA
Normal aa
Het Amel Aa

I give you

Amel aa
Normal ++
Het Amel a+ or +a

Is basically the same.

Can it can use the symbols in Pritzell's Cornsnake Morph Guide?

No, I have not seen that guide.

Can it handle more than 3 alleles?

You can have more than 3 genes on a locus.

Oh btw, the main reason why I stayed away from AA and Aa is because that would limit the program to 26 (a - z). My program can use many more characters. In Ballpythons for example we have more than 26 genes.

Actually, the use of the + character is one of the things I really like about the Generic Genetics Wizard.

The mouse genetics people have spent decades developing their set of symbols. I want to be able to use these standard symbols for six alleles at the mouse's a locus.
A^vy = viable dominant yellow
A^y = dominant yellow
+ = normal
a^bt = black and tan
a = nonagouti
a^e = extreme nonagouti

Everything to the right of the ^ character is a superscript to the base letter(s).

As the GGW only uses single character symbols, it will not do the mouse symbols and will not do Pritzell's corn snake symbols.

The GGW does not do dominant mutants right. Using the genotype and no possible hets settings, crossing two animals that are heterozygous for a dominant mutant should give
1/4 normal
2/4 het (mutant)
1/4 (mutant)

Instead, the GGW gives
1/4 normal
2/4 (mutant)
1/4 (mutant)

My opinion: still not ready for prime time. :awcrap:

Well there is no pleasing mr Hollander is there LOL.. Keep in mind that my Generic Genetic Wizard is not ment for fruit flies or mice but only for snakes. Sure enough the program can be better. But I like it so far...

Having absolutely no idea about the genetics of ball pythons, but having downloaded and used the Wizard for corn snakes, I think you've done a splendid job! Anyone that has an issue with them needs to go ahead and create their own, making sure that it can pass a microscopic examination...on their own time...written NOT in your native language...and allow the rest of the world to download it for free.

I call them like I see them. If that makes me a cranky S*B, then so be it.

There is a lot to like in the GGW. But the problem with the handling of dominant mutants is a flaw. Snakes have dominant mutants, too. They are not confined to mice and fruit flies.

But if the GGW *works* correctly genetically, it will work with fruit flies and mice because genetics works the same way no matter what species you're working with.

Has the issue with the allelic Butter/Mojave/Lesser/Phantom/Russo het Leucistic/Mystery Dilute been fixed on the downloadable version?

I must admit I want that locus to work and look like Paul's described for the mouse genes - I want to be able to assign them all the following denotations:

W^b - Butter
W^m - Mojave
W^l - Lesser
W^p - Phantom
W^r - Russo het Leucistic
+ - Normal
w - Mystery Dilute

Because using the same letter for those genes to indicate "these are all on the same locus" is far better than using all the letters and symbols in the alphabet and having mismatched pairs in the genotype reports.

No, I have no knowledge about BP morphs. I think the program works fine but the genes have been entered into the program the wrong way. But since it is a generic program you can delete genes from a locus en add genes to a locus and set the gene strength yourself. If you have altered the genes and you think it seems to work fine I have no problem uploading your Ballpython.ini into the zipfile on my website.

Actually, I'd also like to be able to CHOOSE whether the program uses + for "wildtype" or whether it uses a symbol that *I* choose. In the example above, I would want to express "Normal wildtype" as W.

When I get home I'll make sure the alterations are complete and that I've got the right "combination names" set up for the "white snake" complex genes then get in touch about that .ini file :)

I tried to download the program, but the download links keep taking me to the parent directory page. Every time I click on GenericGenWizard.zip/ the link keeps taking me to the parent directory page, instead of opening up a download window. Help, please?

i'm having the same problem as shaberry.

i'm using firefox, but i tried the URL on internet explorer as well, and i was still taken to the Parent Directory page.
