Hey everyone! My boyfriend and I are seriously considering getting a corn snake. After we had to let his Snapping turtle go (He was unfortunately getting too big for his tank and getting too aggressive to be safe.) it's been kind of depressing looking at the giant empty tank in the middle of the room. I've always liked snakes and talked my boyfriend into getting started with a corn snake. Though he wanted a python, i figured a smaller snake would be easier to care for and wouldn't get in the way if we had to move. (some people just don't like snakes.)

I've had limited experience with snakes, only taking care of a boa for a week while my brother was moving (I didn't have to feed the giant thing, though.) But enough to know the basics.

I wanted to know if there is any personality difference between a male and a female corn snake. I know in some species (not just snakes) females are much more aggressive and tend to have a handling problem unless you handle them ALOT. Is this true with corn snakes or does it not matter?

Also, I was wondering about heat lamps or under cage heating. My boyfriend and I live in the north east and the winters here get COLD. Would a heat lamp or two be enough (one set higher than the other so the cage still has two temperature zones)?

I have heard males are less aggressive than females, but i don't know if this has been proven, my female corn is very docile and has never tried to bite me or strike yet. I handle my female almost everyday except for feeding day and digestion days (48hours). Most people recommend a UTH to heat corns, and have a UTH and a Heat Lamp for pythons. Corns are not basking snakes. Below is a link to a great Corn Snake caresheet that will go more in dept than i could ever. Hope the little information i gave you was helpful and i'm sure the caresheet will answer a lot of your questions. Welcome to CS and enjoy. Oh BTW there are many great FAQ's all over the site, but you will see them at the top of the thread list under the sub forums.

I think Jimmy got it all covered there! Out of my corns, there's no consistent difference between the males and females in temperament, except for the mature males going on a spring hunger strike when they've got ladysnakes on their minds.

Males will sometimes go on hunger strikes during breeding season but other then that their behavior is the same. Under tank heating is best but if you are having probems keeping the temps right during the winter you can use a basking light to suppliment the UTH.

Females can produce infertile eggs (slugs) and either lay them, reabsorb them, or get eggbound with them.
