I've got a young corn snake from my local pet store and it's about 5 inches in length. I'm guessing it;s fairly young but when I got it from the store it was shedding just not all at once in patches. The guy said it was alright and to just "bath" it in warm water to help it shed. I've had now a month and it's doing it again. I keep his cage between 28 degrees celius on the warm side and 22 degrees celius on the cool. side. I'm wondering if this should be a huge concern or if it's just normal for a young corn. Thanks for all your help.

Does he have something rough in his cage to help him rub the skin off? If not that might be it. Also do you have a hygrometer? (measures humidity) it should be around 40-50%. If you don't have one do you mist his cage about 1- 2 times a day? Those can all help. As well as giving him a soak in water. Just put a clean wash cloth in a bowl and put some room temperature water in it to just fill over the bath towel. Let him soak in it for a bit and that should do the trick. Also what temperature do you keep your cage at? It should be at 75-85 F during the day and at night 70-75. Baby corns like yours like to have around 80-90 but 75-85 is perfectly fine. If you use an UTH (under tank heater) then you can set a water dish over it and let it evaporate raising humidity. Also you can wet a paper towel with room temp water and let him slide through it. Hope this helps!

Good luck with your new best buddy. :D

If you have other questions don't hesitate to ask! There are plenty of good caresheets on this site and many more than willing people on the forum.

Patchy shedding is due to excessively low humidity. At shedding time, you'll need to boost the humidity a bit, to about 55% or so. This can be accomplished by misting your viv once or twice a day until shed, providing a humid hide (you can find out how to make one using the search function) or by just draping a wet paper towel in the viv and keeping it damp. I rarely have to do that anymore, but if your house is very warm, or you use heat lamps to warm the viv it can dry the tank more. 5 in. seems extremely small. Most neonates are bigger than that. Are you sure you've measured correctly? If you can post a picture of it next to a ruler or something, I can give you an accurate measurement using my snake measurement program, or you can download it yourself from Serpwidgets website.

Sorry not 5 inches but 15 inches. I don't anything to check humidity but I'll pick something up tonight from walmart just to be sure it's humid enough for him.

Thanks for the help folks. Turns out humidity was way down but got a probe and a spray bottle and it's now back up to 50%.
