I have herps!
Hello, All!

I've been interested in snakes most of my life. My brother had kept a garter snake that I caught (one of what seemed like a million that summer), when I was 9 years old for a few months before it kept escaping and our mother made him release it.

If it hadn't been for the awesome education I received at the local well-reputed reptile shop last Friday when I picked up my first snake, paired with the abundance of knowledge gained from 12+ hours *studying* on this forum who knows what I would have ended up with?

I went with a laid back little Lavender that was born December '09 for my first choice. Without further ado, let me introduce Voldy (Voldemort)! This is today, the day after his first feeding with me (which went VERY well, btw).

The weekend came and went, I left him alone for most of his first 24 hours. He's very active, but not at all rambunctious or aggressive. My scaredy-cat husband asked to touch/hold him, and the big softy fell in love! Monday night when I got home from work, I was whisked away, back to the same breeder for our second snake and set up! So we are going to stick with two (for now, as I see all the time how addicting they are).

We are planning to go to the East Coast Reptile Super Expos, (Formerly the Northern Berks Reptile Show), in Reading, PA this weekend. I thought it would be a good opportunity for us to learn and observe and get some ideas for their vivariums as well! Has anyone ever been, or have any advice? Is this silly to do when I already have my snakies? Oh, by the way, here is a picture of Nagini! Amel/albino(?), born late November '09.

Same plants, different vivariums. I promise!

Let me know what you think! I'm sure you will see me surfing around, commenting, and possibly asking tons of questions!

Thanks for reading :wavey:

Nagini could use a fake plant drapped over the opening to that log as it will not seem very closed in and secure to Nagini. Each end should have a hide that they can go into and feel hidden and unseen, to them it equals security and staying alive.

Both of your snakes are absolutely beautiful and I love their set ups so far.

Welcome to a great forum and the best (addicting) hobby in the word!!

Edit - as well those dial temp gauges and hygrometers are notorious for being terribly inacurate. The temp needs to be checked on the glass under the substrate, right above the UTH and the temp should be 83-85. This can be done with a digital thermometer with probe or an infrared temp gun. The dial and strip thermometers only check air temp, not belly heat which your snakes need for thermoregulating(digestion) and are often out above or below what they read by as much as 15 degrees. This can potentially lead to severe problems for your snake, either to low of temps to digest, leading to food refusal or regurges or temps that get far to hot, leading to dehydration, regurges, neurological issues and in severe cases death.

Hi!
My girlfrind and I will be at the Reading show this weekend as well! If you would like to find us and say Hi, that would be great. We would also be happy to give any advice you might need. We have been active members here for ages and there will also be other members probably there as well! Go check out the Mid-Atlantic subforum on this site to meet more locals!
Here is a picture of Lauren (Hypancistrus here on the site) and I. I am the short one! LOL.

Tara, what a very nice pic of you and Lauren. Oh and by the way I love your necklace it is really nice!

Well you did and awesome job, I love the detail, it is so easy to tell exactly what kind of snake it is!! Now when are you making some awesome corn snake necklaces????

Haha yeah, if you don't already have an Etsy account you should get one. I would definitely buy necklaces or maybe paperweights/ornaments as nice as that!

Kari, welcome to the site, your set-ups and snakes look great!

Yipee!

Thanks for replying!!

@ Tisha, I never even thought of covering the log! That will be top priority when it comes to additions in the very near future. :)

@ Tara, keep an eye out for us too! I'm probably going to be so amazed by everything, I am VERY easily distracted LOL, but I will keep my eyes peeled and tell Hubby to do the same. I'm really excited! Thanks for the info and the link!! That really is a great necklace, too.

@ Candace, I must have re-arranged the set ups 700 times before I actually said, OKAY let him out of the cup! LOL. Thank you for the warm welcome!!

Oh goodness! Haha.. Well I definitely hope to see you guys! I'm so new to all of this, but so committed to being the best snake mama I can be!! Hubby's along for the ride mostly =] and he likes to look @ them! lol. We'll be in Reading on Saturday for a few hours in the morning to middle of the dayish!!

Tara, I just checked the link, I love the corn snakes esp. the little hateling!!! Can you PM me with what it would cost for a necklace and a desk top sculpture of a hateling??

Well we're planning on leaving Scranton at around 9. That'll get us there for 10:30-10:45.. and we'll hang around til 2ish!

When are you 2 planning on being there? I am also trying for Sat. late morning?

We are going out with friends on Friday night. I'd like to get up early enough to make doors but I doubt that'll happen. ;)

Late morning sounds about right for us. I think it's about a 2 hour drive if I recall correctly (we used to camp in Lancaster, PA, when I was a kid).

You have a photo of yourself?? We'll look out for the Grumpy T-shirt too. ;)

FYI, I am about 5'8" and I'll be wearing jeans, a VT cap and some random t-shirt. I could throw on a Ravens jersey and really piss some folks off. Ha!

Tara is shorter... 5'nothing. Short hair. :) She will be wearing her ball python necklace.
