I couldn't find a whole lot on using shredded newspaper for substrate other than some do use it. Are the inks in newspaper ok for shredded newspaper? Can one just use a paper shredder, shred newspaper, and use it?

shreded newspaper worked prety god for me i used a paper sheder to works great hehe only thing with newspaper is its not very appealing and sometimes its hard to do spot checks cuz their poo blends or hides to where u cant see it but i dont see much problems with using newspaper and have heard of many people using it

I used paper too for a while. I layed a couple of sheets down flat then, I shredded several piles around the cage. I didn't use a paper shredder just ripped it up myself. I found that I couldn't tell where the poop was and I it really didn't look too good. So little by little I moved up with stuff in the cage. But if you search yard sales or ask around, some people have old tanks and stuff that they have lying around, you can get some good stuff from people and it won't cost a lot. If you want to prepare the wood you can find all kinds of neat stuff in the woods.

new viv

I decided that newspaper bottom and newspaper shred (although safe?) is not the way. I have redone some of my vivs with rubbermaid bins instad of ten gallon tanks. I have better temp and humidity retension. I lay a full newspaper on the bottom and use the same shredded recyclyed grey paper matter/substrate. I now use a larger water bowel with "better than tap" water, the cover (of the bowel) used to hold a large sponge soaked with water, a rock, and a temp strip on the outside.

My tex rat/corn is doing WAY better....he/she didn't shed for many months and was looking like death. After many "hydro treatments" (extended water baths) he has shed 2 full sheddings over the last 3 days. Still has yet to eat after 3+ months. Yes, 3+ months. His color and activity is good now though. Very good and I feel very hopeful. I was really worried about him. Offered pinkies a number of times but still has no interest. So I just gave them to my anery and he chowed them down without hesitaion. I am thinking about putting a fuzzie in there on monday evening. I know he is starving.

Anyways, Hi all!

Dan
