Ugh!

So if you guys read my intro post, I was waiting until I settled in at my new Place in Pitt to get a corn and was going to the Pittsburgh Reptile show on June 27th to get my new pet. Well, certain plans changed with people who were going to let me stay before my lease started, and well long story short if I did get a corn I wouldnt have a place to keep him/her for about 48 hrs. So no go on getting the corn that day. I cant exactly order one online and have it shipped because with my crazy graduate student schedule I wont be home at all during the day to sign in for the snake. So...I would have to either get one from a Pet store (which everyone has told me not to) or wait until the next herp show in the area that fall on a weekend which would end up being in August...

Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to vent because I'm so frustrated and am about to explode with impatience :bang:

My corns were shipped to my work and I opened the boxes, verified they were OK, then tucked the boxes under my desk for the rest of the day. Do you have an office or lab they could be delivered to?

I will be doing a rotationg in a lab, however, being the "new girl", I'm not sure I want to have something like a snake delivered to the workplace. Dont know how the people there would react. Plus, how did you keep the snakes warm and ok until you got home?

My office is reasonably OK, temps 68-72F & they were protected from drafts by their packaging. Really, only 1 person noticed at all, and she wanted me to take out a snake for her to meet! I think I may make a convert out of her because she thought my anery girl was so beautiful (which she is).

The safest and cheapest way to ship...

is for it to be held at the closest FedEx office. Then you pick up on your lunch break. I try to avoid shipping to a home whenever possible. It costs more, and mistakes are more likely to happen when shipping to a residence.

Corns do not have to be kept particularly warm during shipping. In fact, better a little too cool than too hot! Room temps are great as long as the belly is empty. The heat is for feeding and digesting. You can keep it in the box at work all afternoon, as long as it is approximately room temp.

A whole three months??!

Seriously though - they live for 15+ years. Your enthusiasm is fantastic, but you'll need to develop a much more laid back attitude to keep Corns, otherwise you'll end up a nervous wreck! They somehow know exactly which of our stress buttons to press!!

You could just look on these three months as practise. And in August, you'll have a much wider choice of hatchlings.

I am stuck in Huntersville until August...I want to stay in Raleigh, but I have no income and cannot afford to pay my own rent and my parents wont pay my rent for me to stay over the summer. They want to wait until I go back to school in August. You're not the only one waiting impatiently for the month of August....*sigh*

Well I will definately consider it having it shipped then. I know it sounds like I am just whining and impatient, lol, but in reality I have been waiting for about 21 years to have a snake. Thanks for the advice and support guys

IDK, Bitsy. I went to my first show in January. Found out I'd missed the one in November and I couldn't wait until January. I was witchy for three months from excitement. That and problems with my family ruined Christmas.

To the OP, waiting might be good. Or if you really want to take the jump, having one shipped is good too. If you're like a lot of us, once you set your mind to something all is lost. That's what happened with my five newest corns.

.

I had Eden shipped to my FedEx facility and she was just fine..the people on the other hand were stepping back when they handed me the tiny box like she was going to get out and attack them!!
