My fellow Americans,
Election 2012. Think Mohr.
A time is upon us. Our political atmosphere is charged. Gas prices are moving higher and higher and flower blooms are occurring at an alarming rate. Several states have proposed laws to limit our freedom to own reptiles and amphibians. Our rights are being infringed. We need to step up. Now is the time. Just like the war on guns has looked for loopholes to ban gun ownership by limiting the supply of ammo, it comes from non-legitimate and sketchy sources that the new way to reduce reptile ownership is to limit the sale of rodents and crickets. I tell you, this is a time to unite. Unite with the fishermen of the world to preserve our crickets. Raptor centers need to join the fight to save our rodents. We all need to work together to lead this charge and I believe I am the best person to lead this posse!
I am your leader!!!
As a new leader and candidate hopeful, I need to focus my duties on different things. Like the politician that leaves the comfy senate seat or governorship, I, too must limit my duties. Therefore, it is with great regret that I effectively step down as a moderator here at cornsnakes.com.
This decision has not come lightly. I have been active on this site since 2003 and have owned cornsnakes since the 90’s. As many of you know, last year I moved to Georgia where cornsnakes are not allowed as pets. The only exception is an educational permit and somehow breeding hundreds did not qualify for education. As a result, I sold, loaned, or donated every reptile I had. With the continued infringement on our rights as pet owners, I found it was time to slay a bigger dragon. I was at first concerned with changing Georgia’s backwards laws but now that I have a clear vision, why stop there? In 2012, I can certainly change everything if I am so fortunate to lead. I will make sure there are plenty of rodents and crickets for all.
In addition to election 2012, my new direction as a professor has opened new doors in the realm of herpetology. I started the slow process of starting a herpetology lab as well as writing grants for herpetology related research. Equipment accumulation is accumulating and connections are being connected. It is a new time. In addition to my 2012 responsibilities, I also teach several classes and labs a week and time is a difficult thing to find. If I am not reading, writing, or doing arithmetic, I am doing something else. That something else is many times not patrolling cornsnakes.com for spammers, offensive language, or annoying people. With no cornsnakes, finding time to visit a dedicated cornsnake site is not always top of mind and therefore my duties of a moderator have been slacking recently.
Susan and Nanci have done a wonderful job during my slackness of moving and settling in but it is not fair to leave the burden of fixing those reported posts and subsequent forum patrols squarely on them. I have discussed stepping down from being a moderator with both of them as well as the owner of this site, the one and only Rich Z. All three accepted my resignation and understand how life changes. The decision did not come lightly but I had to face the facts. With 2012 coming…who am I kidding, you guys are on your own to secure rodents and crickets. Good luck. You have a mountain ahead of you! Like I was saying, my decision was not easy to make but it had to be made. When being honest with myself, it was easy to see that not owning a cornsnake makes it less of a priority to get to this site daily. That is not what a moderator needs to do. A moderator needs to be here often and to deal with everything that happens. My fellow moderators have done a great job but I needed to be fair to myself and to them and see what the realistic side of this was going to be. Fall semester was a training session. I was moving, I was a new professor, and I had lots of things going on. It was easy to justify not being here and that my absence might only be temporary. As the spring semester continues, however, I find myself with the same amount of no time and an inability to frequent this site daily. Therefore, honesty prevailed; I needed to start the process of transitioning out as a moderator and the first step is notifying the powers that be and now the rest of the cornsnake.com members.
It has been a fun time and from here on out--or until I move to a state with cornsnakes and am back to my daily visits and win a mod again--I am relinquishing my moderator duties and posting as a civilian of cornsnakes.com. Goodbye blue name. Welcome back, name in black…(or I guess since I have a forum still my name is green…but that doesn’t rhyme)
Cheers,
-Jeff
PS. Yes, this is serious. I am stepping down as a moderator. No, I am not running for president. Yes, I have no snakes. Yes, I have no time. No, I am not vanishing forever. What? Don’t think that, that was mean. Yes, I’ll visit and post and lurk every now and then. And yes, I am a bit off and if you were around when I vied for mod or any of the other times I posted off the wall posts, this fits the modus operandi perfectly.
PS. II. I believe Rich Z will be seeking out a replacement and more information will be posted in the near future.
