Nocturnal Lighting

Does anyone use the LED type nocturnal lighting around here?

I know there is a blue color and a red color. Any preference to color type?
I guess the blue would simulate the moon light more and the red would not be visible to snakes????

I'd sooner use the LED type rather than an incandescent type light bulb, mainly due to heat issues.

Any thoughts?

I'm planning the same thing, either red or blue LED night lighting. And for the same reason you stated. No heat is emitted, so I don't need a guard on the lights. Low power consumption is a bonus too (compared to incandescent).

Right now I've been checking out lighting strips that would probably do the job nicely but they're not widely available.

I searched the net and various forums extensively and I can't find any information on using LEDs for this purpose.

So I guess we may be the first to do so (or at least post about it).

Not sure what your availability is across the the "big pond", but I found these last weekend while shopping at "That Fish Place / That Pet Place": http://www.thatpetplace.com/Product...ium+Lighting+Moonlight+LED+Blue/Shopay00.aspx
I'm blessed to have this store only 25 minutes from my house.

I was looking at the Blue one for $13.99: http://www.thatpetplace.com/Product...ue/T1/F38FX+0434+0105/EDP/47165/Itemdy00.aspx

Or the Red for $13.99: http://www.thatpetplace.com/Product...ue/T1/F38FX+0434+0151/EDP/50717/Itemdy00.aspx

You have to make sure you get the one that comes with a Power Pack. The $11.49 one do NOT come with a power pack. These are used to "daisy chain" or add onto another LED unit to expand your needs.

Would these work for you as well over in the UK?

These units are real slim and small shaped and they come with mounting hardware to retro-fit into an existing light strip. Right now I have a Perfecto 18 watt fluorescent light strip and I'm sure it would fit inside.

Keep me posted please!

As long as they were made for our plug sockets and our power eletrical stuff I think they would work without any trouble.

mmmm kinda like garden or christmas tree lights most places should be selling things like that soon i would think.

I don't believe I've heard of anyone on here using the LEDs, but I have heard plenty of mention of night lighting. From what I've read, red is the best way to go. I don't know whether corns can see the blue light, but I've heard that they don't have a great sensitivity to red light.

There is a lot info about Moon Lighting on a couple of fish forums. I believe one forum is aquariumadvice and the other might just be The Fish Forum, but I'm not 100% sure.

Again, all that advice applies to fish and not corns.

FORGOT to add that there are LED light kits sold on ebay for pretty cheap. However, for small vivs (10-30gal) you would probably only want at most 2 or 3 lights to keep it from being too bright, IMO.
