Nolvasan & vinegar--how much water to dilute it with?

I've been doing some reading on how to clean a snake enclosure, and I'm thinking of going with either Nolvasan (which is quite expensive) or vinegar to clean my future snake's home, as I'm too nervous using bleach. I was just wondering how much water you use to dilute each with to fill spray bottles? I also saw something about a generic version of Nolvasan that's much cheaper, but the link no longer worked. Does anyone know what it is and where I can find it? And one more question for all you fine and helpful folks--as all my stuff including my snake's cage is brand new--should I clean and disinfect it before getting a new corn? Thanks for the help!

Whatever you clean or disinfect it with needs to be rinsed out with plain water afterwards. I guess I would mix ammonia in a 10-25% solution. Bleach is also very safe- I would use a 10-20% solution. Never let bleach and ammonia mix. Always rinse well with plain water.

I use 2 spray bottles. The first is a mix of about half and half vinegar and water. The second is just water. I spray everything down with the vinegar bottle, wipe it out and then spray it all again with the water bottle. Once it's all wiped out the second time it's ready to go! That seems to work for me!

In terms of the new items, I don't know if you HAVE to clean them first, but I would. Sometimes they have that 'new' smell and I feel better making sure it's had a once-over just to be safe.

I use nolvasan's generic, chlorhexadine and typically mix it 1 oz chlorhex to 1 gallon of water (or 1/4oz to 1 liter). It doesn't keep well in clear containers though. If you mix it in a spray bottle or something, be sure to keep it in the dark when you're not using it.

I hate the smell of vinegar and bleach, so I refuse to use it... I get chlorhexadine cheap from my vet.

Kathy: If quat 4 is the same thing as Lemon Quat, it's what we used to use at work for cleaning all the critter cages up until recently. It works pretty well but didn't play nice with my skin. I'd recommend wearing gloves any time you use it!

How about hydrogen peroxide/rubbing alcohol? I have seen recommendations for disinfecting snake wounds to use hydrogen peroxide, so I would presume it to be sufficiently safe and effective. Although I can never tell whether my hydrogen peroxide is in fact still peroxide or has degraded to water.
