Non-feeding hatchlings, how do I get them to eat.

HerpsforU

Cornsnake Crazy
I had two eggs hatch out from a clutch on 7/2/06. They both had their first shed on 7/13/06. I offered them their first food item on 7/14/06 meal was refused, I offered again on 7/18/06 again refused, I then didn't offer again until today 7/25/06.

How do I get them to eat.

BTW the food item I am offering is 1 f/t day old pinky mouse, my first clutch that hatched eats the f/t like there is no tomorrow, so I thought this second clutch would eat as well...I am getting very frustrated, I know that they can go without food for longer than 3 weeks, but I would really like for them to EAT ALREADY!!! I am sure some of you can tell that this is driving me nuts. :crazy02:

Paris, I feel for you. All you can do is go down the list....

1. f/t in a deli cup overnight
2. throw your hands in the air and scream when they refuse
3. brained in a deli cup overnight
4. throw your hands in the air and scream when they refuse
5. lizard scented
6. throw your hands in the air and scream when they refuse
7. live day old pink
8. throw your hands in the air and scream when they refuse
9. force feeding
10. throw your hands in the air and scream when they refuse

Then you have to let nature take it's course. That's why you need another kingsnake...(seriously, I hope they all start eating for you. I hope my stubborn babies start eating too).

I`m one week ahed of you.. and I am starting to think about forcefeediing.. NOTHING have helpt the three littel buggers here yet... :twoguns:

good luck with your littel guys!

My girl hasn't eaten yet either, but it's early on for her, so I'm not worried. And good luck to both of you :)

I would reccommend trying to find some Live newborn pinkies. Some of my babies will only take those to start and one of them would only take it if I slightly cut the back of the live pinky which increased the smell.

Just my thoughts

What I've had great success with is take a frozen pinky and thaw it out in warm water so that it's pretty warm too. Then take a fresh can of tuna and drain out all the "tuna juice" into a bowl/cup/whatever. Dip the fairly warm pinky in the "tuna juice" and then put in a deli cup in a dark place. The tuna juice method has worked wonders for me; I've had great success with it.

Hmmm I have #2,4,6,8, & 10 down really well. Now I will try the odd numbered ones.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will tray again in a few days...hopefully one of the above methods works for me..cuz they are just too dang cute to cull...

I just got two non feeders to eat by defrosting the pinkies in a bag with a larger mouse. Good luck getting them going.....

"throw your hands in the air and scream when they refuse"
I end up doing this as well.... :grin01:
Sometimes i think that corn babies are put on this planet to get us all stressing when they refuse to eat..

Nice list,thanks Kathy

The tuna juice method mentioned earlier sounds interesting, I just don't quite understand why a corn would want to eat fish...might give that a try, thanks :)

Doh! I forgot the tuna scenting. It goes before lizard scenting. It does work. I used it last year and had great results on a pair of non-feeders. I need to get to the store tomorrow. Guess I'll be eating tuna sandwiches for awhile. Good luck, Paris.

PS...At the back of your mind keep telling yourself that they won't all survive, it's not in Nature's plan. It doesn't make culling easier, but it does prepare you if you have to do it. I hope not!

I live in South Africa, and was advise against tuna scenting, for some reason there's added "extra's"....so was suggested to me on our local forums that i should stay FAR away from that option... :-offtopic

I would have to agree with this method. This has worked for me several times. This or cod liver oil.

Does anyone know the reason why Tuna and Cod liver oil work? Is it because they mask the smell of the pinky, or is it something else?

I have no idea why it works :shrugs: ; but it does and I have seen no ill effects from it.

I can't imagine what the "extras" would be in using a tiny amount of water from a tuna can except for a few preservatives. Heck, we eat it. Maybe the way its packaged for South African consumption is different than for American consumption. :shrugs: It's entirely possible.

I totally agree with you....I was more than willing to try untill I heard about the "extras",I have looked at so many variations of tuna here (tuna in brine, salt water etc etc etc),and like you said, there are a couple of extra preservatives, but nothing that I can see that would cause any serious damage,I personally cant see why I shouldnt try ,but at the time I wasnt willing to take the risk......

So the brine wouldn't hurt them? I would have thought it was a bit salty...maybe they like salt?
