noob morph confusion

Hello all. Sorry ahead of time for sounding like a complete noob. I have tried the corncalculator and just don't seem to get it. I go to this website
http://www.cornsnakemorphgallery.com/cinder/
and it gives great info on the morphs and what combos make what morphs. but I plug it into the corncalculator and almost every combination I make says normal het for something. I dont know if I am doing it wrong, or what.

The reason I keep trying it is because I have a motley sunglow and I want to see what morphs I can produce using her, we're going to an expo this week and I want to get a male. So I plug in amel and motley for my female and like everything I plug in for a male gives me normal. UGH.

Oh, and I read on that site above that sunglows can be hypo. Does anyone know if this is true? I will post a pic of my snake when I get home so you can be the judge. She's very bright red/orange, has red eyes and white checkering on her tummy. Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

You will get all normals no matter what you breeder her with unless you breed her with another amel based morph or a het amel. And if she has belly checkers she is not a motley. When you get a chance post those pictures so we can see her.

ok. Will do, thanks for responding. Maybe checkered isnt the right word. Its mostly white but there is some of her orange color underneath. I dont know what else to call her bc isnt Motley referring to the dashed patterning on her back?

You are doing it correctly. Most cornsnake traits are recessive. That means that the animal needs *two* copies of the gene to display the trait (het animals have only one copy, so look normal) and that means that each parent MUST have at least *one* copy of the gene in order to pass it on to offspring.

For example, two normals het amel will result in mostly normals and a few amels. A normal het amel to an amel will result in about a 50/50 mix of normals and amels. This is because the amel parent can *only* contribute an amel gene, but the normal parent could give a normal gene OR an amel gene.

If you breed an amel to a lavender, well... the lavender has no amel gene to give, and the amel has no lavender gene to give, so the only thing you can get is normals het amel and lavender.

*edit*

Motley is a combination of traits: A belly mostly clear of checkers and connected saddles. However, sometimes those saddles don't do much connecting at all and the animal can otherwise look fairly normal.

But you can also get animals that look motley on top, but have fully checkered bellies... and they are not genetic motleys. These individuals are sometimes referred to as notleys or mockleys. I have one, if you want to look up piccies of him. His name is Nautley.

Here is a motley belly and like Shiari said some can indeed look like it but are not.

weird, ok. I will post pics as soon as I can. I've never heard of a notley or mockley and tried googling it but cant find anything lol. Thanks for the help!

Oh you won't find anything by doing a google search. It is not a technical term just something we call them. That boy is a butter motley. Which is caramel, amel and motley. If you bred a butter to your girl you would get amels and if she is indeed a motley then you would get amel motleys.

very nice. Im so glad I found this site. Everyone here is so nice and so willing to help. I really appreciate it. Thank you for making me feel welcome and not completely clueless lol

more noob issue

Ok I took pictures, but I cant attach them. Its saying the pics I took are too big. Ive posted pics before and never had that problem, I dont know how to decrease the jpeg size. Any ideas? I'd like to post my pics of her.

To amend, she does have a solid white belly. Upon close inspection, she just has some orange patterning toward the bottom of her belly, it just looks like her side pattern bled down. Thanks!

If you are using a PC and have microsoft office installed, you can do a quick resize using "microsoft office picture manager". Most other photo editing softwares will allow you to resize also.

Most photo programs will let you adjust the size. Many of the photos I have were adjusted on a mac. Just pull down menus until you find something to crop/resize the photo. OR, there are photo hosting sites, such as photobucket and imageshack that will automatically resize for you.

You should be able to resize with just about any image editing software on your computer. I'm assuming iphoto would work. Just find where you resize/scale the image, and scale it down to 400x600 or whatever size it wants on here.

Alternatively, you could create a photobucket account to host your images (photobucket.com), and photobucket also has a tool to resize images. And then you could post the link straight to that image on here.

Edit: nevermind, Megan got it all out before I did

finally pics!

Ok, I finally got pics. The first is a pic of her dorsal patterning. The other is a pic of the top part of her belly with the solid white. Thanks for looking and the help!
