Normal Hatchling?

utne2K

New Guy
Hi,
I've had my hatchling a week - s/he ate on day 4 and just dumped a load on my shirt on day 7. It was a bit of yellow mush and some clear and dark ooze.
I put her back up as quick as I could. Smelled very strong but somehow like Hienz 57 :shrugs:

On the up side s/he is looking around the cage now so maybe I didn't get the full load and s/he has some more business to do.

I would think it has been a normal first week for both of us, eh?

Thanks

lol :grin01:

Did the poo sound normal for a baby. The yellow stuff and clear and dark ooze?
I guess I should've checked it more closely, but I just wiped it off quick.
I think there may have been some tiny dark solids in the darker ooze.

Would you know how often hatchings will shed? I plan to feed about twice a week for the first month or so to try and make sure s/he has plenty of what s/he needs in nutrition.

Thanks for any advice.

It sounds pretty normal. When its fresh its sort of "oozy."

They shed as much as the need to. There isn't a set schedule. Obviously the more you feed the more she'll shed. I wouldn't feed anymore than every 5 days. You don't want to over feed her. I personally feed once a week when they're hatchlings and have had much success with this. Feeding every 5-7 days will give her all the nutrition she needs.

I've found that my younger snakes shed about every 30-45 days. As they get older, it gets farther between.

lol Welcome to the pooped fold ! :roflmao:

Just to give you some idea of when sheds are due, I feed my hatchlings every 6 days, 6 out of 9 shed every 30 - 33 days, there are 2 non feeders that throw that equation out, and one that sheds whenever she damn well wants to (one at 38 days and the next at day 23)

Something for you to think about is keeping a log. Nothing fancy, just a 2 column table for a date and what happened, eg. ate 1 pinky, blue phase, shed, etc. This comes in usefull to determine when a shed is pending if s/he refuses a feed for no "apparent" reason for example. If you have a memory like mine it will prove invaluable.

Any good advice?

My advice is to read read read!!!! And then read some more. This is a great site for information and you can find just about everything you need to know about keeping corns here.

My advice would be to look up as much as you can about cornsnakes before then. There is lots of stuff you need to know before getting one that can't be gone into detail over on this forum. Buy Kathy Love's "Cornsnakes - the comprehensive owner's guide" and find as many care sheets as you can on the internet or in books. You should be setting up the vivarium with the heater to get the temperatures right several days before putting a new reptile into it.

Thank you!

:crazy02: Thanks very much for that,I have been looking on the net all week in preparation but i think talking to people with hands on experience is much better!Am getting very excited about my new arrivals,I have waited about five years [persuading my other half] to have one so thought well, lets have two instead. How long does it take to make them reasonably tame?I don't have any worries about handling them, just wondering because my older boys are certainly going to want a look in!Thanks,Viktoria :grin01:

um..... it really depends, u might have some nasty ones tht might take a while and might bite youy a couple of time but there are not comon and the bites from hatchling do not hurt, you will also see some snakes like mine that was bought from a petco. and was almost never handled and it has never even struk at me but u should have a taim snake within a month or 2 tops, unless u just get one that has a taste for human flesh

Bitey Hatchlings?

I got two hatchlings and housed them separately.Neither of them bit when handled and put into thier new pads.Hope this carries on for a very long time!Saw a carolina corn with very bad burns at a private reptile place yesterday, poor thing. If i had of been more experienced i would of brought him home too..He was healing up,was due to some prat not using a ceramic heater guard. How clever was that,NOT!How can some people be so ignorant,it beggars belief. The chap that rescued him also had 5 other corns, all very beautiful,2 bearded dragons, leopard geckos,a chameleon and a poor old iguana that some silly person had managed to chop the best part of his tail off.All were well looked after and seemed happy with thier environments.needless to say there should be more people like that on this earth, not the prats that buy any pet on impulse and "can,t be assed" to look after it properly,if at all.I have done my level best to find out as much information as possible bout my babies,BEFORE i went to collect them!cheers
