Hi everyone,
I have a female amel cornsnake that I acquired from someone this past summer. I was told she was an '02 hatch. When she came home with me back in July she was not even 30 inches long and only about 160 grams. Now she is a good 40 inches long and well over 300 grams. For a while I was feeding her one moderate sized adult mouse per week, then started feeding her two per week (per feeding). Well, in the past month or so she seems to have started to get a little too fat (at least it seems to me) so this past week I went back to feeding her only one mouse. I fed her the mouse late Saturday afternoon and she defecated sometime during Sunday night. Since she defecated so soon, do you think one mouse is not enough? These are not overly large mice, they are the adult mice you would find in a pet store. You know, a little on the smaller side. Any suggestions would be great. Sorry to ask so many questions.....

I usually space out feeding for longer periods than 7 days when they start looking a little fat.

So do you think I should just continue with two mice per feeding, but space them out to 10 or 14 days? Or should I give her one mouse every 10 or 14 days?

I'd personally go with one every 10-14 days until a little weight comes off. Are you planning on breeding her?

Ok, I'll try that. I don't know yet if I am going to breed her. I have a yearling, 26 inch male so it might be a possibility in the future. Both of them have great appetites, it's like you can't fill them up!!

If you plan on breeding her this year, continue to feed her weekly. You will want to ensure that she is well nourished for laying.

Well, I don't think it will be this year seeing as the male is so young and small. I'm thinking maybe next year.....

At what point are the males ready anyway?

I've used males that were 18 months before. The male's size isn't as important as the females. As long as she won't eat him. ;)
