Not Sure If My Female is Gravid

I have had a male creamsicle and a female anateristic (spelling) together for about a year and a half. The female stopped eating a little over a month ago. I inquired with my local reptile store and they all agreed there was a good chance I had a gravid female. She shed about two weeks ago, and seemed very restless the past few days. I have since put an egg laying box in with them and she has not left it since it was placed in the cage. She seems to be crawling around in circles within the egg laying box. My questions are as follows:

What are the chances she is actually gravid?

If so what type of corns will the offspring be?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert by any means but that behavior could be from getting ready to lay eggs. Is her back half looking fatter than usual? Did you brumate them last winter? I think they usually breed earlier in the season like 1 0r 2 months after coming out of brumation.
She might just be in shed though. If you can, put the male in a different cage so if she does have eggs she will not be disturbed by another snake.

I did not brumate her, but her back half does look a little fat. Comparing her cross-sectional shape to my male snake, she does seem more triangular, as if her spine is being pushed up by eggs.

How old is your female? She might be to young to lay eggs, even if she's vertile. Kidda like a 12 year old human girl. It's possible for her to have children but it's definately now healty. Why did you take such a risk? She might become eggbound. Though i don't know much about that.

I didnt realize I was taking a risk. The local reptile dealer said it would be fine to house a male and female together and they likely wouldnt breed until I brumated them. They are both approximately 2 years old. The male is 39 inches in length and the female is 36 inches in length.

Just curious why you jumped to the assumption that the snake was too young. You obviously did since you asked why he took such a risk. You really have a habit of jumping on folks don't you. Even if we assume that the year and a half he has had the snake is it's entire lifetime, it is not impossible for her have be at a reasonable breeding size in that amount of time. Try getting more information before you jump on folks, and even then, a little more tact wouldn't suck.

Sorry. My english isn't the best and in this case i misphrased. I did mean it as a question.

But in other cases i do jump at folks. Usually when i am pretty sure a snakes health is at risk due to an unsuitable pet keeper or due to neglect of the owner of some sort. Simply because a lot of pets live a miserable life with their owners, or even die before their time. I am only here for the benefit of the snakes. Not to sweet talk people.

I guess my question answered itself. She is currently laying eggs, there are five visible eggs and certainly more to come.

I take it from the previous discussion that I should not worry about my snakes health, and I am not mistreating my animals in any way. I do take care of them the best way I know how, and I am simply trying to get advice on how to properly care for the eggs. I do plan to get another enclosure for the male so that I have better control over future breeding.

Congratulations:). I really hope your snake will go through the egg laying ok and you might want to start looking for an incubator? It is just so cool when they hatch.
You will learn a lot on this forum - I didn't know anything about snakes when I started keeping them but I've learned a lot here and also from the book The Corn Snake Manual. Keep us posted

36 inches long is fine for a female to breed I'd say (opinions anyone?). It seems to be more size than age when it comes to safe breeding. Congrats on those eggs and good luck!

I breed without brumating, so it's not a pre-requisite by any means, although more experienced folks here have observed that brumating increases their success rate.

Bit difficult to say what youngsters will look like. A creamsicle is a Corn/Emoryi Ratsnake hybrid, and so your pair may not behave in the same way as pure Corns. However, if you treat the creamsicle as though it's an amel Corn, then the hatchlings will look like Normal coloured Corns. When you sell, them, make sure that buyers know there's some non-Corn in their parentage, as some folks can be a bit troubled by hybrids (even 2nd generation!).

Just an update....

She laid 17 eggs successfully, and doesnt seem to have any more. Since they were laid the eggs have remained in moist vermiculite and between 83 and 85 degrees. I have purchased a hovabator and am currently testing its functionality before the eggs go into it. I plan to sell them to the reptile supplier that I purchased the snakes from once I get them eating, and they will definately be advised of the snakes parentage.

I think many people who breed, go by weight, not length. I think most have mentioned around 300 g. My 15 month old corn is 3 ft. but I don't think I'd breed her this early. Congrats on the laying! Let us know how many she lays, and how they look. This is so cool!
