When I hang out with cs.com people, i somehow end up with more snakes!

Went to the reptile show in cincinnati and came home with 4 snakes... in my defense, one is temporary (going to a friend once it's an established feeder) and one was free... oh, and one was marked $50 but I got it for $20!

Getting ready to shed. Can't wait to see her new colours!

And I blame Susan for this last one. Had I not seen her post in the "black or white snake?" thread, I probably wouldn't have fallen for this guy.

I like the lavendar a lot too!

That bottom one, is it a corn or rat snake? I am still unsure what the difference is. I was told that a corn is a rat snake. So why aren't they all just called rat snakes?

I saw that pic Susan posted and it was awesome! Really cool coloring.

The lavender is actually a hypo lav bloodred :)
The last one is a white-sided rat...there are a few structural differences between the corn (red rat) and other rats, if you look closely at their faces you can pick out a few subtle differences.

Funny, I went to the Repticon show in Columbia S.Carolina and came home with 12 or 13.... LOL

I think that corns are no longer classified as rat snakes. Rat snakes are in the genius Elaphe, while corns are in the genius Pantherophis. They all used to be in Elaphe, but there are profound differences between the two and they finally were reclassified- quite a few years ago! It hasn't caught on yet though!

Corns are called Red Rat Snakes. In the field I have to remember not to call them Corn Snakes because thats really a term used more by hobbyists than biologists. I submitted a report to USFWS while doing research in FL on the various predators of the prairie ecosystem I was working in, in relation to a ground nesting endangered bird, and more than once had to think about putting down Red Rat instead of Corn.

I am almost glad we don't have Reptile Expos here in TN. I would come home with a ton of snakes!

Corn sounds friendlier than RAT. It's all marketing..
