Odd BP feeding behavior?

My very young male ball python has always been an eager eater. He always strikes at the first presentation of the prey item (once even caught my pinky finger by mistake), and he eats F/T with great gusto.

Last night, however, he was more aggressive than usual. As soon as I opened his viv, he began to stalk my hand. Not wanting another accidental bite, I grabbed my longest tongs and fished out the thawed rat. By that time, though, he was already half-way out of the viv, posed to lurch out in a strike. I dropped the rat back into the cup and tried to move him back down into the viv with my tongs, and he struck the tongs! I couldn't give him that rat fast enough, and he immediately grabbed it and sucked it down.

I don't have any other experience for comparison, but this seems odd considering the fact that BP's are notoriously picky feeders.

What's going on here? Am I raising a monster? :shrugs: He's a sweet little snake, but his feeding behavior does make me a bit nervous.

Well, molly my royal has a great feeding responce, she's not aggressive, shes just goes upto the food, eats it, then goes to her warm side, no problem's lol, I think you should think yourself lucky, some people would love there Royal's to eat, would you rather have a healthy eating royal that is abit aggressive at feeding time or one that never ate at all?

Gl with the little guy :)

That sounds promising. How big is the mouse? How big is the snake?
MIKE

I was giving him small adult mice, but I moved up to rats of the same size when I realized he wasn't growing as quickly as he probably should. I don't remember the weights off hand, but I do know I used the Munson Plan to choose the prey size. It leaves a nice, noticeable lump for a few days, but he doesn't struggle to get it down.

And I've been feeding every 7 days.

Chester was like this as a baby. He'd come right out of his box to get the mouse. Once he bit me on the leg in his enthusiasm.

He's lost that enthusiasm as he reached sexual maturity, sadly. I believe a lot of BPs are pickier as they reach adulthood.

Good luck!
