Odd shedding issues

Crys

Proud Mom
My RO, currently, has a very very light case of scale rot. I'm treating that currently (any tips here are welcome).

Currently though, besides the scale rot, her side scales are shedding one at a time, leaving little clear dots all around the tank. She's really active and in her water a lot. I apologize for lack of images, if you guys need some, I'll be happy to post some later on.

Her scales on the side, after the "shed" comes off of one, are a little rough and look like they are still growing.

Any tips? Ideas? what can I do to help her out?

-Thanks!

Shedding individual scales is a symptom of continuing scale rot, as are the rough scales underneath.

With scale rot, you need to get the tank as dry as possible and get her out of the water. The fungus is encouraged by damp conditions, so if you can get her onto newspaper and give her a water bowl that's too small to sit in, that will help.

You also need to be disinfecting the tank and all the fittings every other day to try and clear the spores up, as well as wiping her down with something antiseptic (I used Bettadine over here in the UK - not sure what the US equivalent would be). Didn't win me any popularity points with mine (!) but this routine sorted her out in a few weeks.

I found that reducing everything to a minimal "hospital" setup was the easiest way of managing things - two hides (one warm and one cool, with a smooth surface like earthenware or disposable carboard boxes - cork bark has too many nooks for the fungus to hide out in), small water bowl, newspaper substrate.

I'm sure others will know useful techniques as well.

Good luck and keep us posted on progress.
