Well, almost 3 weeks ago not just 1 but two of my snakes got out! Don't know how, but they did. They are smart little boogers! Last night right as I laid down, my mother started screaming. I went toward her scream and on the floor was my amel in blue. She said that little kitty came in and dropped it at her feet. The snake was ticked off, in striking mode, has some what I thought were penetration marks but later on found out that they were only missing scales. The snake I guess knew that I was there to help her and I got a bowl and she crawled right in without hesitation. I gave her some water and man did she drink. Do you guys think she will be ok? I don't think she will have a good shed due to the missing scales. Any info is appreciated.
:shrugs:

Well I'd monitor her condition carefully, when was he/she last fed? Did you know that he/she was in blue?

Snakes generally like to be left alone whilst in blue and shedding, because besides feeding it's a time when they feel vulnerable. Just continue what you'd usually do when they go into shed (misting, humid hide etc.) and leave him/her alone for a few days. Don't panic just yet if there's a lack of activity as that's normal when they're in blue, but when they actually go into shed then monitor the movements carefully. If he/she is moving about normally, and after shed you feed and he/she takes it, then I wouldn't be overly worried. Just make sure that after he/she has shed you look at the scales in detail.

If you're still worried however, you could always get an exotic pets vet to have a look, as you know your snake better than we do and how it moves, normal activity levels etc.

Hope that helps

David

If there are no obvious injuries she should probably be okay. You might want to feed a smaller than usual prey item for the first feeding.

And just to add it is VERY important you found how it got out, or it WILL do it agian. If you have sliding doors get a lock on them. If its a top opening tank make sure its clipped down, as snakes can easily push their way out otherwise.

Glad you found your snake!

I caught my Texas Ratsnake and Durango leaning on the side of the terrarium and push the sliding door sideways in order to get out. It was quite shocking.
Naturally it was immediately corrected :crazy02:

and what kind of clips can I get for the screen top? I would love to be able to 'build' or buy a rack setup but it seems to complicated and the already built ones are so much moo-lah...any suggestions?

You can get the clips for the lids at most pet stores. That is if you are using an aquarium with a screen lid.

I have always used some sort of weight to hold the lid down. A 12X12 marble tile is pretty heavy and will lay flat on the top. They are about $2 each at Home Depot.

My other question is, you said 2 snakes got out. Is the other still missing?

yes and it is bigger the the one that was found...but I dont have the slightest clue where he is. The previous owner said that the snake randomly dissappears and then re-appears. So obviously he is a very good escapee

Sterlite boxes with the latches are pretty escape proof. Ventilation holes can be burned into them with a small soldering iron.

You should try to find the other snake as soon as possible. More captive snakes die as a result of escape than from any other cause.

Well get weights, clips whatever but no snake should be a "good escapee". After first escape you should figure out how they got out and prevent. Recently Dean posted a thread about the potential danger of escaping, and I have to agree with him this is a serious matter. I'm not saying you but most think it is 'ho hum' my snake escaped or 'oh god' my snake escaped. :shrugs: susang

What are sterlite boxes, is that like rubbermaid? If I got those what would I use for heat? I have tried to find the other snake, it has been almost 3 weeks. I haven't given up, it is just exhausting looking everyday for the little booger.

I agree with you, I now have books on the cage! I was wondering if anyone has used the glass aquariums that have the built in slide locking lid?

I found my amel on the 17th of October, she was in blue. and hasn't shed yet. Is there maybe something wrong? I have been misting and have a humid hide for her...but nothing...any guesses?

If she was just going into blue when you found her, it might take this long. Has she gotten clear yet? Usually the shed happens within a few days of getting clear.

She was in blue when I found her on the 17th and the next day was clear, so she has been 6 days clear
