You should qualify your overly broad statement.

There are MANY species of snake that do not eat rodents at all. Even corn snakes in the wild do not feed exclusively on rodents. There are tons of examples of hatchling corns taking earthworms and lizards.

There has been pics posted (on this site I believe) of corns eating crickets.also of corns eating chicks and even eating other corns not to mention a lot of talk about corn hatchlings prefering anoles.
on the issue of snakes in general . They eat all sorts of things including other snakes , lizzards, amphibians, eggs ,fish, worms, insects, birds and a lot of non rodent mamals.
Most hobbiest prefer to feed thier snakes rodents because they are inexpensive , easy, nutritiuos and usualy free of diesese.

being we're on a corn site, i'm assuming he's meaning corn snakes.

And he's gotta point. Feeding a hatchling corn a cricket is rediculous. Most who are noneaters will eat anoles and such or anole scented pinkies. Feeding ur corns crickets, meal worms, wax worms etc is just asking for trouble.

as far as i can tell from posts made here and elsewhere... young snakes will eat crickets but they arent very nutritious and thus it aint a good idea to be using them

While it may be true that SOME neonate corns will eat a cricket, I have never seen one, nor heard from a reliable source of such happening. That doesn't men it never happens, but I get to talk to more than just a few people, and I hatched a few corns, myself.

Personally, I don't think you can get a corn to eat a cricket without some sort of scenting taking place, but if you have that one in a million corn that likes crickets, more power to you. I just wouldn't expect it to live long on such a diet. it's not just a question of lacking nutritional value, but also the damage that can be done to the neonate corn's unbelievably thin intestinal lining by the sharp edges and spurs of a cricket's exoskeleton.

Even so, there are a variety of prey items that corns will accept beyond rodents. If I recall correctly, Rich Z. even had someone tell him that he had been feeding his corn earthworms for over a year. Rich said that the snake appeared to be normal and healthy in every way, but the person who had caught the animal didn't know any better, and had been feeding the snake worms as a solid diet. Go figure.

I would say that there is a great deal about the outer limits of cornsnake possibilities that we simply do not yet know, and possibly never shall. I agree that those individuals suggesting crickets as an acceptable food item are misleading others (whether intentionally or not), but I couldn't tell anyone that rodents are the ONLY food item for your corns. It's just not accurate information.

Hope that helps a bit --

I'd just like to point out that CornDude did state that he was referring to cornsnakes, not all species, as it seems some of you thought.

I never thought he was referring to all snakes. I mention other species just to elaborate my point.

He did say "they eat rodents, and rodents only!!"

That was the statement I took issue with.

I have a rough green snake that is an insectivore. I am glad you edited your post because it was not accurate before. Some snakes DO eat crickets!

the point

I think that although he might have been a little overly broad with his statement I would imagine it was brought on by the extrordinary amount of people who come on here with questions such as "Can I feed my corn snake crickets?"
Well, sure you might, by some strange stroke of luck, get a neonate corn to eat a cricket or two but you sure as hell won't raise a corn snake to adulthood on crickets.
It is just beyond beginner to lack even that much knowledge about a snake before you get one.
That would be like me getting a cat and asking if I could feed it
tomato sandwhiches. Sure it might eat one if it was starving, but it sure as hell can't live on them.
I think it was simply frustration.
once again I vent..lol
