So my "Normal Corn Snake" turned out to be a Black Rat Snake. The guy at the pet shop lied I suppose. He told me how he owned many corns and had about 80 snakes total at his home. I would think someone like that would know the difference between a normal and a black rat snake. Oh well, he's still cool. Can i still post on this forum considering I don't own a corn snake? haha Someone reply to this because I'm bored.

i don't have a corn (yet) and i post a good bit lol
besides i use a lot of info i find here with my rat snake

cool... im a bit excited to see my snake grow and change color... how long before a black rat snakes starts losing his patterns?

Looks like a Black Rat youngin' to me as well.

I'd say if its not what you wanted, take it back to the petstore and raise hell with the manager about being sold a snake that isn't what they claim it is. I'd also contact the Better Business Bureau in your area about the matter as well.

Let this serve as a lesson to always try to research before you buy. Normal corns, even hatchlings, should be reddish on the saddles. =/

I had done my research and his saddles are very dark red. Plus it was a stormy day so it was a bit dark. And for $25 I cant complain a whole lot. I like him a lot so I'll keep him, but i will have a word with the guy who sold me the snake. I had been in the week before but they didnt have any corns. He said he was going to a show over the weekend and would get me a corn snake. When i called on monday he said he hadnt found anything to his satisfaction, but i stopped by anyway for supplies and hes showed me this "normal" corn snake. I was going to order something from Kathy Love but i couldnt affor shipping so i went with the $25 and i liked the was he looked anyway. Now I really just want a Sunglow Motley, thats what i should have held out for. Oh well, Ziggy is going into blue and im excited to see his new skin soon.

I forgot to mention that I am a tad bit pissed off however because it seems this guy took advantage of me. I might raise a bit of hell to try to straighten that place out. Plus they charge 99 cents per pinky, and thats the cheapest place in town!

i wish i could get pinkys for 99 cents the cheapest place around here sells them for $1.75 no matter what size the mouse is

but i would deffinitely get things straightened out with that shop, theres just no excuse for something like that.

And here I sell my extras for 10 cents each. ;)

99 cents for a pink is highway robbery. For $4 I could get I could get a pair of mice and all the pinks I wanted. =P

Well I'm glad you like your snake regardless. Black Rats are decent snakes, I've kept a couple of wild caughts for a month or two and they were perfectly tame. They just get a slight bit longer than I want in a snake.

I'd just go in with pictures of your snake compared to a normal cornsnake of the same age and ask if they're the same snake to him. If people in a petstore can't tell the difference, they need to work at the Post Office.

Yeah, I'd say if you like him keep him. The first snake I ever saw was an adult black rat so I kind of have a soft spot for them. Plus my boss just informed me his house gets over run with them every spring so I asked him to catch one for me :D lol. He hates snakes!

Yep he looks like a rat snake, the markings on the head give it away, rat snakes dont have the same markings as a corn, the stripes continue around the head in a sort of circular pattern. whereas in a rat they stop around the neck area. and he's the wrong color! he might be mistaken for a baby charcoal or anery morph but definitely not a normal corn. he looks kinda like my Shadow. but darker. very nice rat snake.

as for .99 cents a pinkie...OUCH! i recommend ordering frozen pinkies online. even with shipping it's way cheaper than that.
although since they sold you the wrong snake, i'd ask for some free pinks. :)

He does look handsome!
Something similar happened to me. I went into a local store and they only had one corn, labeled "albino" cornsnake on the glass, but when the sales lady took her out she was orange and vanilla - gorgeous. Later I found out that a local guy sold some creamsicle hatchlings to the store. (I've seen a picture of her brother, which looks just like her.) I'm sure he told them, but they labeled the snake what they wanted to label it to make money I guess. This was the snake I "rescued" for $49.99 that they had cohabitating with a ball python in what looked like a 5 gallon or less. Ugh. She has turned out to be real sweet, and a little piggy. I named her Clementine.

good save kimbrya. i really dont like it when pet stores that have no knowledge of herps decide to try and sell them. herps are delicate animals that need special care...actually all animals need special care...

i just recently bought a corn snake, was told that it may have been a "neon" but it turns out it may actually be a hypo. and he's gorgeous. and for $20 i got a good deal. a normal corn goes for $20-$50 here.

i've learned that you just cant trust pet stores...most of what they tell you is false.

With pet stores, it's always: Caveat Emptor. With anybody, for that matter. ;)

I am really wanting a sunglow motley. I may have to give Ziggy a new home once he gets bigger because i can't keep an 8 foot snake. Or 6 foot really... I need a small snake for college and city life. This is a bit depressing.
