OMIGOSH! We found Starkist while watching "Sssssss"!!

OK, for all you folks out there who have lost snakes, hang in there, here's another happy ending after all hope was gone! Back on July 10, I had posted "From 11 to 9 snakes in 3 days" because one snake died and one escaped. This is really funny...

Someone started a thread on here about old snake movies from the 70's. I had seen "Sssssss" before, but not in a long time, so I did a Netflix download to our XBox tonight. I sat with the kids in the wee hours, watching the movie, getting creeped out, and I got up to go get a drink from the kitchen. And who do I see slithering across the carpet in plain sight?? Starkist!! I have to admit, thanks to the movie, a chill ran up my spine at first - it wasn't registering that it was Starkist on the floor, and it gave me the heebie-jeebies to see a snake loose in the house! LOL! I picked her up and she struck at me - first time ever, but I kind of expected it - but she didn't manage to bite me. She looks a little skinnier than the last time I saw her 2 weeks ago, but she doesn't appear to be dehydrated or unhealthy. So, sincere thanks to Calivit, Caryl, Asbit, Desertanimal and Nwheather for your prayers - they worked! :) Oh - and my daughter is completely hysterically happy - she thought her snake was long gone...

I am so, so happy you found her. I had read your story the other day about your daughter writing the message for Starkist and it really touched my heart. I even told my sister and some friends at work! We were all hoping for you and are so happy for Skarkist's safe return!!!

It made us wonder how long she had been hanging out in the playroom. This is the warmest room in the house, because all our computer equipment, a TV and game consoles are out here. I'm sure the warmth drew her here. There's also a nice, dark toy closet to hide in. When I found her, she was making a beeline for the door to the patio, which has a small hole in the weatherstripping on the bottom. I bet that little turkey was going outside every night and coming back in at dawn to "roost".

I've found escapees that way, usually at night. Once I was walking into my bathroom, and there was an escapee, slithering across the bathroom floor. I picked him up and put him back in his home. It all seemed kind of.. natural?! It was funny, I didn't even do a double take, just kind of picked him up.

The smaller your house or apartment is though, the easier it is to find an escapee. If the escaped snake is a decent enough size, they can make it a long time without dying. I lost a Honduran Milk snake once (I still cry sometimes over that one), and eventually had to accept he was gone. Months and months and months later I was moving out and the movers found him curled up under the hot tub. He had survived an Oregonian Winter just fine under there. Unfortunately the movers didn't have enough sense to capture him, they put him down in the grass and told us later!! :crying::realhot:
Ah well, I figure he's still living out his life in that garden, content with his hot tub heat source. :flames:

Omigosh, under a HOT TUB? It's amazing to me how many people find their snakes MONTHS down the road... Makes me feel like a quitter - I had kinda figured she was a goner after a couple of weeks. Even rented her tank to another snake! LOL I told her that's what she gets for running away.

It seems like I've always found escaped snakes within the first 24 hours (alive or dead, if you have a cat :sobstory: ), or you find them wayyyyy down the road when you're least expecting it. Then there are of course those that are never found at all. :(

One nice thing though, is that since I've had my rack my escapes have SIGNIFICANTLY gone down. In fact.. I don't want to jinkx myself, but I haven't had a snake escape from my rack in my care.

So the moral of the story is get a rack!!! Sounds like your collection is headed in that direction anyway.. :dancer:

YAY!!!! I am thrilled to death you found her! I bet she was going outside! How funny is that!!!! Oh & I bet you daughter is just loving her to pieces now!!!!! Grt Happy Ending!!! :D

She was going to make some popcorn...
I just snorted so loud from laughing and now my mom is looking at me weird. XD
I think I'd strike too if I got SOOOO close to the popcorn and someone grabbed me! Lol.
Glad, glad, glad your little Starkist is back! That's incredible. :)
