ILOVECORNSNAKES

My lil Delilah!! ^^
Hello everyone! I am in need of advice! It being spring now, my family is talking about our family vacation this year. This year its MY turn and I would very much like to go herping. My family,(just me, my mom, and my dad) are okay with that. NOW, I need to know were to GO herping at.

I'm interested in viewing ANY type of reptile/amphibian, but I do have some preferences. I would really like to see snakes. There my favorite. Next on the list would be lizards/skinks. And last would be frogs/toads.

Before any of you tell me I can't take anything home with me, I know already. I'm not looking for a new pet. I'm looking to view reptiles/amphibians in their natural habitat. At the most, all I be doing is holding them.

We are expecting 1-2 weeks of vacation time and it can be anywhere from the beginning of June to the end of August.(our choice) I don't think we will be able to go any farther west then Missouri, or any farther south then probably Tennessee, but I'd still like anyone's input, even if I can't make it there.

Okay, Please post; Where, When, And what I can find.

:)Gracias!!! (I'm not Spanish, I just like saying that) :)

One of the best herping trips I ever had was to Arches National Park, in Utah. No snakes, but a million lizards, and some scorpions! It's very beautiful there. But very hot! I even found a horned lizard on a trail ride- my best lizard find ever!!!

That's a good question...if anything, I'd check the Dept of Natural Resources websites for states that you can visit...IL has a great DNR website -- http://dnr.state.il.us/ -- or you could just email all of the "contact us" people of the various DNRs and see who can send you some good info on herping locations.

I can think of two places outside of Chicago that are great places for herping...The Grove in Glenview which has excellent trails for herping and the Wildlife Discovery Center, which actually recommends/takes herping trips to Beaver Island, MI and Shawnee National Forest in Illinois.

Hmm, I think that I just planned your trip for you. :p Stay in Glenview, go to The Grove & the Wildlife Discovery Center & then head downstate to the Shawnee National Forest. :) You'll be all herped-out!

If you want to do some herping here in the US and you want to stay close by, there is no substitute for hitting up Snake Road in IL during the "migration". They close down the road for two months in the spring and two in the fall because of how much fauna is observed crossing the roads. It is one of the meccas of NA herping.

If you're wanting to go herping as a family I would first suggest checking out state laws to see if you need permits or licenses to go herping and how much they cost. Most states consider the act of searching to be hunting for herps even if you never intend to collect. I only photograph them and I still have to have a hunting permit here in Texas.

The number one thing to do when you're herping is make sure you're legal ;)
