I want another Corn snake
Hey, sorry i'm veryyyy new at this. I accidentally bought before I read everything and wasted my money.
1. Is there anything I could do to lessen the temp of the heatrock? Wrap a microfiber towel around the rock or something?

2. Do snakes even use the heat rock?

3. UTH..I have a 10 gallon tank at home and a 2 1/2 at my dorm. What size UTH should I get? How do I properly use it?

4. Humidity. It's said that I need 40%. How do I achieve this?

5. Whats the sleep cycle of corn snakes. My corn snake seems to be sleeping every time I want to play with it.

Sorry again for these stupid questions.

Yeeaaah should definately not have bought this, I think corns are not really 'baskers' and will probably not lie on it, they probably try to burrow underneath it which I imagine is more dangerous :shrugs:

3. UTH..I have a 10 gallon tank at home and a 2 1/2 at my dorm. What size UTH should I get? How do I properly use it?
Right, did you just buy an exotic pet without any planning or thought for its requirements? Don't know about that 2 1/2 Get someone else to answer, but the 10 gallon, get a UTH that covers a third to a half of the bottom of the tank, Read the FAQs they are really good for all this basic information really.

4. Humidity. It's said that I need 40%. How do I achieve this?
Yeah about 40-50%, buy a Hygrometer, will measure the percentage of humidity. As you do not know what it is we can't help you with that yet. Read about lol. Keep the water bowl on the cool side.

5. Whats the sleep cycle of corn snakes. My corn snake seems to be sleeping every time I want to play with it.
Corns are nocturnal, they will come out in the evening and late night, In most cases they will hide all day.

To lessen the temp of the heatrock just unplug it and toss it out the window. The rest of you questions have been properly answered.

Good Luck

Thanks.
I'm guessing the 10-20 gal. UTH would be find. Is there any substitute for a ceramic tile?

Is there a photo gallery on here which shows the diff. colors (is there a better word?) of all the corn snakes with pics?

I think that depends on the humidity in your house. I have both of my water bowls on the warm side because it gets pretty dry in my vivs otherwise.

Yes, Its the thread called 'Photo Gallery' funnily enough.
SerpenCo has good pictures of various different morphs.
thanks. i like the second link. i looked at most of the photo gallery before but they dont show the full names.

i was wondering if they had separate color threads lol.

Sell the heat rock and 2 1/2 gal on ebay to some sucker.

definitely use at least a 10 gal for the cornsnake. i dont even let my fish live in a 2 1/2 gal. it's too small for much of anything, and it's hard to have a cool and warm hide in anything less than a 10 gal just not enough floor space IMO.

As everyone else said ditch the rock...

Get a 10-20 UTH...personally (and I am sure I'll hear about this)...I stick em RIGHT ON THE GLASS...better heat rise...and never had one overheat or any animals get damaged in years...and I have 7 animals in tanks...
If you are careful they peel off just fine...have done it several times and never had a problem...

At some point you will want to move up to a 20L tank...that should be sufficient for the life of the animal...

As for humidity...not that particular...I keep water dish on the cool side...and mist them daily when they are getting ready to shed...and they thrive.

You Mightas Well Buy, A 20 Gallon And Keep It Forever. Maybe Divide It For Awhile Due To Ceasars Age. :)

Yeah I suppose I should have put that, I was just going by the assumption that humidity is pretty much fine and a bowl on the warm side would cause excess, but yes you are right it does obviously depend what the humidity is naturally :)

Ok thanks a lot guys. And thanks for the color variation site. That's just what i was looking for.

I'm goin to buy a 10-20 gal UTH. Then I'll put aluminum foil on the sticky part and duct tape it to the tank. I read that I should use a tile. What exactly does that do with the heat again? Is there any substitute for a tile?

You asked that and it was answered, The tile dissapates the heat, spreads it out a bit, but paper works well too. If you look back, Slippery Ernie said he uses Junk mail etc. I too used to use paper, Now I've just risen my viv up a bit and it gives a nice bit of airflow and the temps are perfecto - This is until I get my thermostat in a couple days.

oo thanks again. Sorry i didnt see that. My wireless connection is really messed up so I could hardly search. Thanks again for puttin up with my noob questions lol.

Is the paper I put between the UTH and viv supposed to be the same size as the UTH? or is it ok for the paper to be bigger.

Welcome to the wonderfull world of corns.... :)

I have to say though, don't waste the 2 1/2 gal. GET A TARANTULA!!! :) Or at least a spiderling then sell it when it gets too big for the tank! lol
